Ancient thread dredge but dan for 3 months ago: it's easy to run straps on speedplay ( I do for starts)- you just need to replace the "bottom" bowtie with a steel loop for the strap- i.e. make themn into single sided pedals with a strap loop underneath- not vastly harder than all other track strap "hacks"
I also suspect that Hippy's one midfoot shoe eats "C"springs because I didn't get the cleat 100% flat on those shoes. In my defence, it's not an easy job to flatten a bit of the shoe that the shoe manufacturer never intended to be flat for a cleat. I will fix it. And if I am right about that particular shoe, wear a hair shirt for a week.
