Exactly what @alasdairw said basically although i used a suction cup from one of those bathroom organisers as it was just easier...

What a bunch of cunts... My next machine is gonna be a Hackintosh at this rate...

I need a new desktop. I've been tempted by a PC for exactly this. I need to spend a about a grand on a Mac Mini (upgraded to spec and glued to together so I can buy only from Apple), or I could get a more powerful PC I build myself and it'll be about £600. But I don't wanna use windows.....

Second hand iMac? Or even Mac Pro and update it's card/ram/ssd...
The new mini's are shite.
You are in dire need of the xMac that everyone wishes existed... -

2nd hand iMac that I can pimp is a good idea. Currently working off a 11" 2012 Air, which I love and is great for editing on the fly, but I've recently gone from 12mp to 24mp with my cameras, so when I have to sit down for a heavy edit, it's starting to feel the strain.

Apples range is kinda shitty atm for anyone with sub 1.5k to spend and wants to do more than Facebook.
Doing bloody well working off an Air!
A Pro could be a good idea too, you can get 4/5.1's for about 600 and then spend another 300 on a new GPU/RAM/SSD as needed...

13" MBP with 16gb ram isn't even £1200, silly good value for money I think. Doubt you'll need to worry about upgrades for a good few years
-
• #6909
Hadn't even thought about the pro - makes sense. I have two decent monitors (if anyone wants one let me know), which I connect to one for editing with the air.

Meh. I edit video and process huge raws on an i5 iMac. It doesn't miss a beat. You don't need to spend as much as 1.5k for a very capable machine. SSD/hybrid drive and a shitload of RAM, job done.
Really glad I bailed on the pro setup, spent the money on going places instead :)

That's quite nice to know actually, was a bit worried about the performance of the mid range MacBook after mine seemed to be getting a little slow (2009 MacBook Pro).

Put an ssd or some more RAM in it. I think the older ones are easier to upgrade?
-
• #6913
I maxed out the RAM (8GB), it got 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo, and GeForce 9400M at 256MB.
SSD is the last option, currently have 7,200rpm HD.

I have done this with a couple of 27" imacs; one of them I use at work with Kingston HyperX 256gb
I used suction cups; if you can collect and drop in central London you are welcome to borrow.
Did not need adapter or any extra cables.
I use yosemite with SSD fan control and TRIM enabler.
Its faster than my colleague's newer/thinner better processor iMac with optical drive.
Since its you I dont have to tell you to do it in a clean dust free environment ;)
I'll post some screenshots tomorrow. Benchmark, trim, SSD fan control etc.
My next work mac is going to be retina iMac. Pictures of bikes will never be same ..On a diff note; I have a 27" decent spec with ssd imac at work with USB issues i.e. the thing doesent turn on if anything is plugged into USB and powers off if anything is plugged in after. Anyone had any similar issues?

I've fitted 2 Samsung 840 EVO's, nice but pricey.
Its the most straightforward thing if you use time machine or CCCloner. The faffy part is setting up a USB install disk, I used Diskmaker X. Then it just takes hours to restore everything. I had a few problems both times, once I with a timestamp error on the SSD and another I will just never know.

Awesome, same drive I bought yesterday. I paid £89 for a 250GB which I thought seemed reasonable.

The current machine could do with a bit of a clean, so I'm going to install a fresh copy of OS X on the new drive.
Hopefully the
createinstallmedia
application is still available to use for building the USB install media, as it was in Mavericks.Cheers for the help!

Thanks Amey! I will have a bash without the cups and if I don't get anywhere I'll head over to you :)

Please do! Let me know the TRIM and SSD fan control you're using.

SSD's make a world of difference, the problem is Apple making it a real PIA to upgrade things after purchase... you can't even upgrade Ram on the 21inch iMacs anymore... not sure about HDD's.
@edscoble your machine is pretty old but I put (well, photoben) an SSD in an even older MBP I have and it became usable again so you will notice a massive difference in yours. I had a Mini for a bit with 2 drives, one an SSD and I swear it ran most everyday tasks faster than my work iMac which is a quad core beast with 24gb of ram.

Alright, I'm convinced, just need to find a 1TB drive and someone to install it for me.
-
• #6920
1TB wont be cheap!
Get as big as you can afford and a decent external for most files... my internal is a 256GB (rMBP) and I keep a 1TB external with all my dropbox etc on. -
• #6921
I've 500GB in mine, and nearly filled it up.
Kept a 1TB external for back up rather than secondary storage.
It's still be cheaper than getting a new laptop when the old one still work fairly well.

• #6922
Aye fair point. Crucial are usually good... http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/ssd/ct960m500ssd1
Backup wise, I think a paid dropbox account is the best thing ever, especially now they have bumped it up to 1TB. 7 quid ish a month for offsite back up (and all the other uses) is so damn good - I lost 5 years work when my flat was broken into and all my drives (and laptops) taken. Never again!

Yosemite looks great... I ought to brave the upgrade, really hope it doesn't kill anything/bootcamp.

Cool.
I'm now wondering if I should have gone for more RAM; will be upgrading the 2.5GHz Core i5 machine from 4GB to 8GB but I'm thinking it might have been better to throw in another 8GB and bring it to 12GB.
That said, 8GB should be fine for the purposes of this machine. What the hell do you do that requires 32GB?
The yosemite TRIM issue was new to me...
Here's some good info on it:
