^ whack a load of reverb on it!

moar than is already there? Feckinell. There's a shed-load of hall on it as it is. I really like the Logic reverb space designer actually. Ive got a few nice reverbs now but I keep coming back to the "nice room" preset on that for live sounding band recordings. That's definitley one of the medium halls on a bus though. All recorded though my new Mojave M300 btw. Man I love that mic.
The tune that these bVs are from has actually been resurected from the early days of this thread. I only realised last night that the original tracks were recorded in Garageband. Although to be honest everything's been replaced so many times that it's a bit of a trigger's broom situation.
Re-did bass and electric guitar yesterday... both of which I intend to re-re-do tonight. will be a tele and SM57 on a champ and the Mojave J-bass through my bass player's GK. Sorry neighbours.

I'm toying with the idea of physical releases, ltd edition vinyl and cassette probably, sold direct through Bandcamp etc. Local acts, split the costs etc.
anyone have any experience of setting up a record label?

Well my old band released a couple of 7"s so the "company" such as it was, was really just a facade for the bedroom industry recording shenanigans of me and my mate doing it n th esly at work. Got the vinyl pressed in Czech. 500 copies... of which I still have 350. Do you want a box?

My fucken mac is flagging under the demands of the Waves plugins. Need to upgrade. Moneymoneymoney. Urgh.
In other news I've been asked to write some music for an indie horror film. Not sure if the guy's a crank or not yet.
Also been approached by a young female pop act looking for a collaborator/band. I declined on the grounds of lack of time/inclination. Anyone know of someone who might be interested? her name is Frankie Forman if you're interested enough to google.

well I went down to Rubadub whilst in Glasgow on Sunday and they still had the Genelec trade in offer on the go and let me take advantage of it without actually trading in my old Tannoy Reveals, so picked up a set of 8020's with £120 off - best thing I've possibly ever done in terms of improving the sound chain! awesome things

Nice! Was close to trading my Adams A5xs for the 8030s on that deal but the intermittent electrical fault that they seemed to suffer from when I got them completely went away. Pumped tunes though them for 10 hours straight the other day whilst painting the bathroom and they didn't skip a beat. They're sounding great now. Perhaps it was just a burn-in thing.
Haven't been able to do any recording for the last three or four weeks now. Life getting in the way.
Soooooooon.

Think I'm getting some mojo back here. Sounds silly but I rearranged by "studio" and mounted my monitors properly which has helped enormously. Also finally got to grips with EZ drummer. The new mic and pre-amp are sounding fucking great and I'm getting on well with some of the new Waves plugins.
Started on a Joanna Newsom cover yesterday which I heard as a kind of Nick Drake-esque hypnotic droney thing: pumping finger picked acoustic guitars and octave bass with a bit of shaker too... It's really rather nod-worthy. Got a trippy phasey tape echo thing on the vocal too which I really like. Haven't felt this stoked about a recording in a long time.
Been trying to really concentrate on getting good signal and not over processing/compressing anything (which is how I used to work before the advent of infinite processing). I'm using the Waves SSL channel plugin on every channel more or less. I'm already smit.
http://www.waves.com/plugins/ssl-e-channel#adding-presence-to-keyboards-with-ssl-e-channel
Then I've usually got the Kramer Tape emulation (on everything bar percussion):
http://www.waves.com/plugins/kramer-master-tape#eddie-kramer-on-the-kramer-master-tape
That eats CPU though so I've had to learn the habit of printing that to "tape" (bouncing regions) then applying EQ after. It's frickken lovely though. All the squash and subtle harmonic distortion you've been craving.
With a bit of subtle compression from the channel strip and the tape flavour on everything I've found no need to compress anything further yet.
Bass I've struggled with lately but I got a half decent signal in with my jazz bass though the duet then tweaked it with the SSL channel, channel Eq (to notch filter specific nasty frequencies) then applied heaps of this JJ Puig bass plugin:
http://www.waves.com/plugins/jjp-bass
Then (as this is quite a sparse mix so I can get away with it for once) a bit of this for some subharmonic goodness:
http://www.waves.com/plugins/maxxbass
Just need to re-do the lead vocal, maybe add some doubling up in the chorus, tidy up the bass part with a few edits then re-track an occasional banjo part. Perhaps some tambourine to add to the general build in the last section and i'm good to go.
Determined not to kill this one with endless tinkering.
Stoked.

Sounds like you're having fun, do you have all the waves plug ins? and if so, lucky you! The CLA 76, modelled on the Urei classic is great on bass, you can really push it considering it's a digital plug in. Looking forward to hearing some of the new stuff especially the Mojave mic recorded vocals. Looks like a quality piece of kit. I want one already! Which pre-amp did you go for in the end? Anyways, happy recording...

@multigrooves: Haha... yeah that would be cool. Hey I need to speak to you about cycle training actually. I may have a little job for you Brian... I'll pm you.
@mr-lunch: Let's say I have access to pretty much all of the waves plugins. It's a little overwhelming having that huge list to choose from but I'm trying to take only what I "need" and stick to the subtler effects that mimic specific hardware, applying them as they would appear in an all analogue signal path. That, the new mic and interface combined seem to have created a step change in the quality of my recordings.
I spent an hour last night trying to replace a bass track that had some big holes in it (went of piste and started noodling and made mistakes at the end). Rather than edit i thought I'd replay the whole thing "better". Did 11 takes and not one came close to having the same loose groove as take 1. I know that's not an uncommon phenomenon but I find it fascinting how the same player on the same kit, going for the same groove on the same track can just come out so differently just hours later.
I suppose I'll edit the original take later this week if i get time. Then vocal, and mix!

spent a couple of hours on this yesterday - Waves Metafilter on the chord, as well as the API2500 - also Dub Machines plug in by Surreal Machines which is an amazing Space Echo 201 plus reverb emulation http://www.surrealmachines.com/
Not sure about the break at 2.50 ish though? Even though I've already established the musical sound earlier on, it still seems out of place? It's better returning to the bass dropping down a couple of notes theme at 4.00 ish, seems to get the same energy back? Wonder if the break is too busy, and out of keeping with the minimal feel? See what you think, be interested in feedback - this was just a quick unmastered mixdown so still work in progress (and went over the top a bit with auto filter automation)

Yeah I had a good look but there's not much in the way of useful mics or anything really suitable for home tinkering as far as I could see. Just a few AKG lavalier types and some odd old pre-Coles ribbons with dubious reviews. Quite a few 48 channel calrec desks though if you've got deep pockets and a forklift handy.

Just testing the water, but would anyone be interested in a Korg MS-20 legacy controller?
Bought off ebay years ago when I had some cash, but has been gathering dust after many software struggles. I could really use the money and the space right now, times are hard yo...

free Waves plugin today
Interesting, I've had my eye on them (and the ATC-1) for a while via ebay but never been convinced by the youtube videos available... Still tempted by the modular option!
