  • I think part of the deal was exclusivity to the data if you invested. It was on the TT forum a while ago, he basically wanted people to buy him expensive shoes to test and most people told him to fuck off.

  • how many Dysons would you need in reverse I wonder?

Forget vacuum cleaners, just fill up a few racks with these

  • Just before I purchase these:
    http://www.merlincycles.com/3t-accelero-40-pro-road-bike-wheelset-pair-74608.html

Anyone have a rough idea how much a pair of flo30's would be to build up?
I'm thinking £80 rims, £90ish for hubs, £40 for spokes plus 30-40 for build?
    bike maths = ~ £250.

So probably a better wheel set for an extra £50?

  • Inc. shipping (in the USA) my pair of rims cost £125. Still cheaper than Archetypes, which would have been the other option, but definitely not £80

  • Ahh, OK - that changes things. Thanks!

  • Isn't it amazing spending so much money and effrot for the breadcrumbs?
Boardman did the hour on a bike similar to the one above in 49 Km and did 56 Km with the most advanced bizarre machine... still short of nearly 50 if he wanted to go with the flow on a motorway.
If one is after speed, certainly should be looking at a recumbent type bike... Bowier did 130 Kmh on this

    Which is based on this

  • but then you're in a recumbent, and no-one wants that.

  • True... it looks ugly, but if I can cruise at 60 Kmh on the flat with it, then I am happy to use one... don't see the point of microscopic that tend to infinitesimal gains... I can't go faster than 40 Kmh for a given amount of time on a road bike... give me the best 20 K pounds TT bike and I can work on the best position and maybe I can push 44 Kmh for a given time... big deal... I might even notice I am marginally faster

  • don't see the point of microscopic that tend to infinitesimal gains

The point is that tiny gains are all you have when the regulations preclude the big gains.

  • Absolutely...
I just find the all point of setting stringent regulations rather pointless... the point is to make things fairer and better for the spectators. Look at Formula 1... hyper regulated now, is it an better than when it wasn't hyper regulated? No... it's worse... as a matter of fact these days the pilot is completely irrelevant

  • Everyone keeping quiet about this to limit competition?

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a flo30 wheelset, although i still haven't decided it's definitely the best choice instead of archetypes or pacentis custom built from someone, somewhere. Any flo owners care to persuade me one way or the other?

  • yeah, mine will probably cost near on 250 for rims and rebuilding. careful of the import tax, which adds at least another £30. I received them this morning though, and they look cracking

  • Anyone been using the Flo30's for a while? How well do they stand up to use and abuse?

I can't see that they have a direct competitor in their price bracket but it would be nice to know if they live up to the hype.

  • I believe @dammit has had them the longest

  • I'm having some built up at the moment but beware, they're actually not as cheap as they seem once you factor in 20% VAT at import and shipping. they're still cheap relatively, just not that cheap

  • I second what BMX_fred said. I bought the flo30 wheelset and shipping, currency conversion and import duties all add up. Haven't ridden them yet, will report back once i have

  • Brief review of mine which have had about 1000 miles. No need to true yet, anodisation has worn off the braking surface a fair bit. Still lovely wheels for the price, maintaining a speed in excess of about 18mph feels dreamy.

  • All add up to?
Ho much for a pair of FLO 30 rims including shipping to the UK and import duties/VAT?
Are they really 560 grams a piece?

  • I paid $207.45 for two flo30 rims + shipping which is about £130

    then 20% VAT (on $160) - about £20 + £9 parcelforce 'handling/ripoff' fee

So total of about £160 for two rims.

Plus build cost it'll be around £250 to replace my new rims with the old ones.

So, moral of the story is, don't just think they're $80 each, they're more like £80. Still they're less than HED Ardennes

  • "maintaining a speed in excess of about 18mph feels dreamy." I was riding my 28 spoke shallow rimmed wheels last night on a heavy steel bike made heavier by gatorskin hardshell tyres. I had no trouble maintaining speeds above 18 mph in fact my average was nearly 18 mph and over 18 mph did not feel hard so was it dreamy - no I had to consentrate it was foggy! I think you need ride more.

aero wheels do work by I keep mine for racing/TT's, I train on "slower" wheels which turn out to be not much slower at all.

There is a good thread about these rims on weight weenies. People who have built with the rims have mixed views about them.

  • Congrats bro.

For clarification, I have no issues maintaining speeds over 18mph and was just identifying the relative ease with which this can be done on these rims. Given that we are in a thread discussing the benefits of "aero" wheels, I wonder if you are in the wrong place...

  • He does have a point about placebo/confirmation bias. I wouldn't expect Flo30s to be worth more than a couple of watts at 30km/h compared with the reference 32 spoke Open Pro.

  • Cheers for the thoughts and feedback from those who've bought and/or ridden.

@bmx_fred are you building them up for road or fixed use?

I'm thinking of getting the road wheelset and an extra 28h rim to build up for track/fixed use. Just gotta find a 28h track hub…any suggestions?
