  • Getting a Rohloff hub on my tourer, looking at possible ratios and found Rohloff don't stock 1/8 sprockets.
Wondering is the thread on the Rohloff the same standard as track sprocket threading?

  • The Thorn forum could be a good place to ask, no? Or SJS themselves, for that matter.

  • Not a member of Thorn forum, and there public search has no hits that are relevant.

  • found Rohloff don't stock 1/8 sprockets.

There's probably a reason for that.

1/8" chain runs fine on 3/32" cog, the same is not true of 3/32" chain on 1/8" cog.

  • yes but I wouldn't just put a 1/8 sprocket on the back and leave the rest 3/32

  • So when you're in the back arse of nowhere and you snap your 1/8" chain and all you can find in the lbs is a 3/32" chain you'll still be walking because that chain won't fit with either of your cogs.

  • The Rohloff hub will only accept a rohloff sprocket. It has a special sprocket removal tool too, that locks the whole innards while you unscrew the sprocket with a chain whip.

I have one on my tourer...using a 3/32" thorn chainring up front.

  • You can't use a standard track sprocket with a Rohloff hub. Rohloff's own sprockets are reversible and last for aeons; I didn't reverse mine until it had clocked up 14,000km, and it's still got plenty of life on it 6,000km later.

  • @mrgumby & @30miles Thanks this is the info i was looking for, not what I wanted to hear mind but you have answered the question.

@M_V How is that any different to when i ride fixed except ill have a lot less load on the chain. Also I always have 2 spare links in saddle bag.

Was wanting to put 1/8 on as i have lots of 1/8 parts already so i could swap and choose ratios.

  • How is that any different to when i ride fixed

Coz fixed is for riding across town, a Rohloff is for riding across continents.

  • just because you would only use a fixed for riding across town doesn't mean everyone does. I ride 100+ miles at a time on fixed, I can be stranded in middle of nowhere doing either. I know how to maintain a bike and check for wear and so would start to carry spare chain hundreds of miles before the old one broke. The sprocket being rohloff only is far more likely to be irreplaceable than a 1/8 chain which isn't overly uncommon.

  • The sprocket is a billion times less likely to break tho

It's made of something insanely hard, not of this earth

    gazes distantly towards the sun

  • I ride 100+ miles at a time on fixed,

Watch out, we got a bad ass over here.

Anyway, you seem to be intentionally missing my point so I'm not going to try any harder to make it.

  • If i wanted to argue the merits of 3/32 vs 1/8 i would have gone on to one of the threads already made doing just that, I asked a specific question and all your posts are irrelevant.
