  • You going to get a pair? Also, where is this source?

  • If you rode really fast your hands would be warm enough to wear little or nothing on them.

Have you considered an outer coating of htfu? ;-)

  • Probably a grand total of 3 days last winter. They really are overkill for anything above 1 degree if you are actually putting any effort in and the rest of you is suitably clothed.

  • The faster you ride, the greater the effect of wind chill. Any faster and I'll turn into a solid block of ice.

  • Yep, for me at least my core can be very hot and my hands and feet can be freezing.

  • It is thawing again already.

Yesterday evening I rode with a wide aluminium rim in my left hand from Limehouse to Stoke Newington in sympathy with all the freeze bags.

There was a really nice fog at the South West corner of Hackney Downs which my front light cut through in a dramatic way.

  • How about people who don't feel the cold start their own thread called "mild weather gloves" instead of criticising people who have poor circulation in this thread?

  • What we need is a support group.

  • Just got this email from cyclestore: https://www.cyclestore.co.uk/email/25nov2014.htm

  • How about all the people who smoked too many fags when they were younger start a thread called "Siberian handwear solutions"?

I'm only joking but if you really find the cold that bad, why not just invest in a decent pair of thinner ski gloves? That means one layer will be adequate without a liner.

Something like the DaKine leather and goretex Cobra's I have would be perfect and really hard wearing (have done about 9 weeks of skiing now - I normally trash a pair a week). Either that or invest in chargeable heated gloves... Or some of those heat pads you can recharge in the microwave.

It might also be worth looking at the sizing of your gloves - lots of people just jam one pair of gloves into another; leaving no air to insulate and making it hard to get blood in.

Apologies if these things have already been suggested..

  • Mittens are warmer than lobsters are warmer than fingered gloves, for a given thickness of material. Just ask the parent of any kid that skis.

Lobsters are great, because they give you enough fingers to do anything you need to do.

Fancypants fingered gloves are great for strangling, but not much else.

  • They're off their tits on amphetamines and beta blockers.

The rest of us have to use out hands for the rest of the day.

  • Mittens are ace. Limited dextirity is an issue for cycling though, unlike skiing.

  • ^ Although we still do all the speed & bennies.

  • My hands also get cold in ski gloves - I wore mittens when I went snowboarding (with a liner), in reasonably warm conditions and my hands were only just warm enough.
When I spent some time in actual Siberia I had heat packs in my (three layers of) gloves and bought a lot of coffees to hold but it's not really that practical for cycling in london.

  • I'm going to give amphetamines and beta blockers a go.

  • Sounds like a lot more fun than gloves and coffee holding :)

  • Have you experimented with wearing one more layer than you think is sensible on your core?

  • I tried that, it was interesting, arriving home a) wringing wet and b) unable to feel my fingers and toes.

  • How good are the merino defeet gloves?

Would they be ok for dry days and add a pair of lobsters for when it rains?

  • Over three years ago I posted in this very thread to say I was riding in £5.95 Aldi ski gloves.

Since then I must have spent > £250 on cycling gloves.

Now the temperature has dropped again and from all the gloves I've bought, I'm back commuting in my Aldi gloves.

Gaze in horror at my haul - the evidence of my search for the glove that would leave me with feeling in my fingers:

  • Define good.

I wore mine today as I pootled around town on a few errands, and got quite wet on the way home but the gloves were still doing a good job despite being damp. However, when (if) it gets properly cold then I find they aren't warm enough and I need to wear bulkier gloves.

  • Top left- hestra? No good?
