How to clean bike shoes?

Posted on
  • Hi all,

I was on a club ride this weekend and have absolutely battered my Mavic Zxelliums (disco-slipper yellow). I was wondering if anybody knew any tested/proven methods to clean them? Particularly the mesh parts.. The plastic will be fine after some baby wipes & elbow grease.

Edit: Pic doesn't seem to do much justice... They look horrible IRL

  • Wait till they dry. Smack them against each other. Wear. Ride.

  • I've got a somewhat similar problem with a pair of Sidis with white mesh... I'm tempted to just stick them through the washing machine on a cold cycle*. What's the worst that could happen?

    *in a pillowcase

  • I'd get the baby wipes on the plastic bits then use rub in shoe stain remover on the mesh.

I'd hand wash them rather than smash them about in the washing machine.

  • Get winter shoes for club ride.

  • Use overshoes when it's cold and oversocks when it's not warm.

    And mudguards in winter.

  • Hot soapy water, standard Nylon brush and some elbow grease. Standard Kitchen Towels on the TPU/plaggy bits and air dry.
Go nowhere near a washing machine with shoes, many do but long term you'll accelerate any adhesion bonding issues and shorten the lifespan of your shoes.
*as @edscoble says, get Winter shoes. Or at least overshoes.

  • What's the worst that could happen?

    You could die?

  • As above. I use washing up liquid in hot water toothbrush, sponge. Pat them dry with towel/ kitchen towel and then stuff them with newspaper to dry, changing it once. Radiator dry out seems to make em stinky.

That's with white sidis they seem to come up nice. I have now bought an identical black pair to reduce having to do this. Taped over the mesh holes on the sole with gaffer tape on the inside, always wear overshoes.

  • foaming car upholstery cleaner works ...
    but overshoes as said

  • I just washed 3 pairs of shoes, 2 SPDs and running shoes in the washing machine. Used a cold cycle and they are fine and clean.

  • i stuck mine in the washing machine
but as netakure says double check cold cycle

  • Clearly in hindsight overshoes is a sterling idea, however they're not ideal once the shoes are already dirty.. so not greatly helpful right now

Will give the warm soapy water/toothbrush method a go, not too keen on sticking them in the machine.

After which, I shall purchase some overshoes ahead of a potential repeat this coming weekend. Thanks chaps

  • all the yellow
