My 8 speed wheelset is a barg IMHO (albeit the rear does require slight spoke replacement to be 100% true) with cassette and tyres and postage for £100.

I have a spare 8 speed Maillard freewheel that I was running on a Campagnolo Record RD and downtube friction levers.
Not sure if that would be of any use to you.
Cheers

Respace 9 speed cassette on 9 speed freehub to 8 speed.
Job done.
I believe Highpath carry the conversion kits. -

also you can use a shimano 8spd wheel. the difference in spacing is negliable. the derailleur jockey wheel's freeplay will handle it nicely.
I've used that, it was a "plug-play".
Lower-upperlimit screw setup should be fine, then start setting up the gears in the middle of the cassette. and it'll work nicely.
Or, you can just put some 8spd spacers to a 9spd cassette. the cog thickness differs only in 0.5mm, so it'Ll shift nicely.

Following on from an epic mistake by a nameless trader (not on the forum)in north London, I have ended up with a 9 speed rear wheel (rather than 8 speed as advertised), so either need to get a 9 speed exa drive cassette or more preferably an 8 speed rear wheel, with cassette would be nice
