  • Ok so here's the plan stan.

Buy a dark silver ex pro keirin frame from NJS Exports (one with a couple of scratches but no dents or frame damage)

Source some parts form there also (Sugino 75 cranks, Nitto bar and stem, NJS saddle)

Possibly fit a nice matte carbon road fork drilled for brake to fit a single dirty harry to.

Find some rims (black), give the bike a simple silver and black look and fit to Dura Ace track track hubs

Whats people thoughts/opinions? Im comfortable with Keirin geometry and fixed but for the sake of pedestrians I think its only right to run a front brake for city riding (Australia)

Has anyone done tis and encountered any problems with it?

  • A Keirin frame is not made to take a rear brake so should not be used single speed.

You should have started this thread on Friday.

  • He implies he's going to ride fixed...

  • He called it a single speed

  • He's australian.

  • he's english and yes he's riding fixed

  • title edited to avoid the confusion

  • Buy a clamp on brake

  • Assuming he's not using a geared hub then fixed gear is also single speed.

  • ^Fixed wheel.

  • Sounds like a pretty standard and foolproof plan, you'll probably end up withs something cool for a good price.

If you're getting a frame from NJS export I'd also order DA 7600 and cranks and hubs from them as you're unlikely to find them cheaper anywhere else.

Here are some keirin frames with brakes on for inspiration :)

And a link to the project thread for the last one.

  • Bike sounds good

  • Fucking hipster bikes @velospace 2009

  • wish i was as cool as you

  • NJS boring mobile

  • Thanks for the pics and tips, the cranks do seem good value on there too and postage to Australia is reasonable

  • 2 x brakes with Kimori brake clamps or GTFO.

  • Samsons nice...

  • Buy a road bike?

  • they look like different sizes

  • This. Not a stupid idea if you had a frame like this lying around... But order it from japan planning for a "backwards" conversion doesn't sound quite right :)

  • Buy a road bike?

    This.

A road frame with forward facing horizontal dropouts is an option. Other road frames won't be.

There's nothing wrong with riding a track frame with a brake. NJS frame are nice and it's good way to pick up some quality steel if you don't mind the odd scratch and dent.

  • Hey, I don't really contribute much here but as I'm in Melbourne thought I might pitch in my 2 cents.

If you keep your eye out on eBay and NJS Export they sometimes have NJS "Track" frames which are drilled for F/R brakes, as well as having cable guides for the rear. As well as occasionally bottle cage mounts and other braze ons. Another option is scouring Yahoo Auctions, but you'll need a little bit of Japanese reading skills as well as a friend in Japan or be able to use a proxy service.

This is what I ride, as a single speed. Its one of those custom Panasonic frames but for road use http://cycle.panasonic.jp/products/pos/custom_order/2014/fpc16/#step&2 . I picked this up the frame for ~AU$60 off Yahoo Auctions as Japanese frames/components aren't worth as much over there, especially second hand.

Oh forgot to add some things.

    • Adding a new fork will probably mess with the geometry of the frame. The forks rake and distance from axle to crown (Forgot the term) will alter all the angles. But not a huge issue.
    • Carbon 1 inch track forks are hard to find. Especially threaded ones.
    • You will need a new headset going from 27.0 to 26.4 crown race. But that's only ~$100.

I'd say get one of these from the link below:
    http://www.njs-export.com/search?q=drilled
Save money on a fork, save money on a headset, looks good and can always change it to a single speed when you get inevitably tired of riding fixed.

  • Good advice...

    Except this shocker...

    inevitably tired of riding fixed

    :o

    Lies !!!
