  • Indications from the machinist are that the proposed delivery date of 1st December or sooner (to customers) is on track.

  • Cool.

  • It's always a nervous moment when I get stuff back from the machinist and offer it up to the application. Did I get my drawings right, or have I just wasted a load of money on some expensive scrap? Fortunately, this all looks spot on. The tool interface is lovely with my Campag UT-BB130, not too snug but with more engagement than BB cups. Thread clearance is a good match for the OE Campag lock ring, i.e. you can feel the play but not see it. Chain clearance may be a bit over generous, I could probably have slimmed it down by 0.5mm but as it stands it should be impossible to snag a rivet head even if you run 1R8 on a 3/32" sprocket. You might even squeeze a 1G8 in there if you're some kind of fixie-trixie freak. This is a pre-production one, final customer deliveries remain on schedule for ~1st December.

  • Looks good.

So the UT-BB130 obviously clears the axle and I can flog my Park Tool BBT-9.

  • So the UT-BB130 obviously clears the axle

No, it doesn't because it's ⅜" square drive. I think the Campag tool is going to be OK with my shortened axles and other bolt-on hubs, but if you use track nuts and the corresponding axle extension, you're still going to need a wrench type tool or a ½" drive socket like Pedro's or the Ice Toolz workshop socket, possibly in conjunction with a 24/32mm socket if the axle protrudes into the square drive.

  • OMG THESE ARE COMING ON MY BIRTHDAY I'M SO EXCITED.

Is it too late to order another?

  • There are one or two spares in 1.290", so you can add one to your delivery by sending another £25

  • Is that picture of a 12t cog? If so that looks perfect!

  • Is that picture of a 12t cog?

Yes, that's my 12T Phil sprocket.

  • Never before could I have dreamed that I'd be excited over a lockring costing £5 more than any I've bought before.

  • I'm getting mine engraved with "#buyer".

  • The Wheelbuilder.com lock rings supplied with PowerTaps are stainless steel and quite thin, so they are about twice the weight of my ones and the step is not thick enough to clear the chain if you use a 13T White Industries sprocket.

  • Thanks.

As I'll now be able to use my torque wrench, what sort of range do you recommend with the System Ex/On-One etc hubs?

  • I think 30Nm should do it. The hub threads have to withstand 100Nm+ when big blokes do hard standing starts (1500W @40rpm 165mm cranks 50/14 gearing = 100Nm at the hub), but all the other bike threads of comparable size are specified as about 40Nm.

  • Is that the production piece?

Looks class with the specs engraved: wasn't expecting that.

What does the out-of-focus script say: are you launching a Tester-spec parts brand?

  • Is that the production piece?

Yes, finished ones are all wrapped up and ready to go to the post office tomorrow. One per envelope, so you get two packages to unwrap :-)

are you launching a Tester-spec parts brand?

More a case of using an old web address as a holding space for details of my products

  • It hasn't actually been tested with 1G8, so that particular tick might not apply.

  • 1/8" is dead to me.

  • 1/8" is dead to me

It would be interesting to see whether there's a measurable difference in efficiency between the 1R8 and the 7R8

  • I'll put it on the list if things to test when I win the lottery and buy a track srm

  • I think if there's a difference it will be well below the measuring capability of a cycling power meter, even one twice as accurate as an SRM . You're trying to find a difference in a power loss which is only about 1.5% of the input power to start with, about half of which is accounted for by the unchanged side plate friction. If there's a difference that's down to the pin/bush, bush/roller and roller/tooth friction, it's likely to be <0.1% of the input power.

  • when I win the lottery

    1. Drive train test lab
    2. Custom chain manufacture based on results
    1. Hire tester as head of testing
