  • @Lw. if you get stopped and they are extra anal then I'm sure they will claim you didn't validate your ticket somehow. Kinda like having a valid oyster but not touching in to use it. Most train operators have really weird terms and conditions so you are almost always in the wrong.

  • I get where you're coming from and an anal operator might try to peg you on obscure T&Cs but you should still be safe.
    It sounds like @Lw. has a paper ticket that won't require tapping in like an Oyster card.

    Penalty fares are always civil offences and not criminal. They could write you out a form demanding payment, but you could refuse if you have good grounds. The rail company would have to get a court to demand you pay which they wouldn't cause it wouldn't be worth the effort to lose.

    Unless you're deliberately avoiding paying or providing incorrect personal details to the revenue collector, it's not a criminal offence because you have a valid ticket.
