Stuck Cog

  • So I have an issue,

When my last bike got totalled the insurance co came to pick up the bits..not really thinking I just snipped the spokes to save the hub and cogs / lock rings.

So now I have a hub with 2 cogs and 2 lockrings stuck fast

I am thinking that I am going to need a vice to hold the hub to undo the lockrings and rotafix off the cogs ?

Anyone have any cunning cheats ?

  • Your LBS presumably has an axle vise, I would pay them a visit. Alternatively, the two cogs are gonna undo in opposite directions so you could try some kind of akimbo chain whip action. But I would just ask the LBS.

  • Use a grinder and cut through 95% of the lock ring with a cutting disk, then use a screwdriver to snap the rest. Then grind some flats onto the hub and clamp it in a vice while rotating the cog using incredible force.

  • I think i'll will go down the LBS route,

I'd like to keep the Phil Hub, Cog's & Lock ring's intact if possible....

    Cheers for the suggestions though

  • Aw. You might try bolting it into a frame and tapping off a cog on one side (with screwdriver & hammer).

  • Sorry, I meant lock ring.

  • I'd like to keep the Phil Hub, Cog's & Lock ring's intact if possible....

    You'll need,

    1 lockring spanner
    2 x chainwhips
    some old spokes
    an old rim

Hold one of the cogs in one of the chainwhips and use the lockring spanner to remove the lockring on the opposite side.

Use the other chainwhip to remove the cog from the side that you've just removed the lockring from.

Build the wheel into the rim using the now exposed flange, you probably don't need to properly cross spokes and stuff, you just need to be able to use the rim to hold the hub.

Now remove the lockring and cog from the other side of the hub, dismantle from the rim and you have everything separate.

You could probably get away with building the hub into a new rim with new spokes and then just building the other half of the wheel once you remove the 2nd cog/lockring but because you'll have laced one side of the hub and be working on the other side, it will probably twist around and stuff and may damage the rim/spokes.

  • @M_V

Wow thanks, pretty comprehensive...sounds like I am not the first person to have trashed a wheel before removing the lockring and cog

  • You're not but just incase you're thinking I did it, I didn't.

  • A big thanks to Joel @ Blue Door Bikes, he has managed to strip down the hub preserving all lockrings & cogs. The axel got bent in the process but they are ordering a new one from Phil Wood and covering the cost. To say I am impressed with the service would be an understatement !
