So this weekend I am hopefully getting my first tattoo done, super excited & nervous. As it's a large piece it is likely to take a good few hours so I was wondering how best to entertain myself without being rude & ignoring the guy, books, music, t'interweb on the phone?
I've taken everyones advice about not racing for a few days afterwards so grudgingly have not entered into the Monday track league. Probably for the best anyway as I think I'm in need of some forced rest.

Most shops will have music playing, and plenty of art on the walls to look at for a couple of hours. A little chit chat with the artist and it'll be over in no time.
I can't think of any tattoo i've had where i've been in a position to comfortably read a book without affecting the area being tattooed.

Can depend. With Wilco I found it really easy to chat to him or just relax and watch things go by (helps if there´s a view) - only his slowest, biggest gun was difficult and I found a way to cope with that by associating the noise it made with something pleasant. Deryn, on the other hand, has very heavy hands; had to grit my teeth to endure it and really wanted something to read for distraction. After the first session I took a Kindle with me - plenty of reading material on it, light enough not to be in the way or hard to hold, even with just one hand if necessary.
I think most artists will appreciate (or at least not mind) a bit of a chat, when they´re not concentrating on some of the more difficult work. But I doubt reading will cause offence. As long as you are not twitching or making distracting noise, shouldn´t be a problem.

Absolutely incredible. Anything like that will only work if it's done incredibly well - which it is!

Sound like an awesome tattoo.
My last experience was pleasant, to be honest, I was more fascinated by her handiwork to be bored.

It depends where it is but I usually read a book. I can have a very short attention span.

I find falling asleep to be the easiest way to pass the time after a little chitchat. All 3 that I've had from Henry Hate I ended up snoring like a drunk walrus after 5mins apparantly and he didn't wake me til it was cleaned up ready to be wrapped. Last time LadyLiz got one at New Wave we sat watching the Fast Show, dude had obviously watched them a thousand times as he paused his work just before Liz burst into laughter every time.
Good luck, if in doubt just watch them work, it's fascinating, especially the first few times. The time will fly by so don't sweat it. -

nice one ed! what are you getting?
after talking to thomas bates and working on a design for my stomach (similar to this but larger and with a geometric print) i now won't be well enough to get tattooed for months which absolutely sucks.
@heavisides always a fan of your tattoos :)
i got this a couple of months ago from a friend visiting from melbourne:

I think I'll get something like that flower in the near future, really can't go wrong with them, should look great once Thomas get well soon.
nice one ed! what are you getting?
A wolf body facing downward on the right side of my right legs, he does some pretty nice illustration of a wolf head, but I'm asking him to do a less aggressive one (yes, aware the second tattoo is a hare).

I like the guy on the right's style. Covered in tattoos but makes sure that he can show up to job interviews and hide everything so he looks respectable.

fancy some dotwork, with quite heavy black - is it less painful than 'normal' - also what is side of torso/ribs like?

Well, I had my first tattoo done today & it was fine, although at nearly 8 hours it started to get quite challenging.
