Mmm, are lockrings necessary?
Ive struggled removing the sprocket with a lockring attatched so never bothered since, Ive never had any problems with the sprocket coming undone

I wouldn't take that risk myself. A lot of tension going through the cog.

And yet you are so cavalier about your downtube-clearance...
The thread says singlespeed lockring. Surely no one would use a lockring on a freewheel? On a fixed sprocket you would be crazy not to, though I've heard guys say it isn't necessary - all the way to the dentist.
