A butchered mech should be able to operate as a push-up if the chosen sprocket size would have been acceptable at the equivalent position in a cassette.
An MTB mech might give you more clearance.
So shift the mech in towards the wheel if you need increased space between the cog and jockey wheel?
I think it's the other way round. Shifting the mech inwards toward the wheel increases the space between cog and jockey.
