The NOS route is very good too. You have a 'working spine' as miro puts it ..

a lots of OTP steel frame I've seen tend to have those (like Brother Cycles).

I think you're right; any UK builder could meet the spec easily. I'm having trouble getting motivated to go custom though- I haven't got strange geometry needs, and I almost feel like I don't deserve it (hard to put into words).

^ these guys will get you what you want built in Italy for ~ 800.
Half that (and some hunting) buys an excellent condition or NOS frame with a story and some history – you might have to have a threaded fork.
