  • Been wanting to do a projects thread for a while and recently acquired a new frame so seems like a good excuse!

A year (and a bit) ago's I bought a otp Dolan track champion with the intention of getting into cycling a bit more. Had been riding a old fixed conversion Raleigh up till then.

The Dolan over the years evolved into this

Being my first bike I am a little protective over the dolan and as I'm commuting 20 miles a day now I thought I would build something I was happier to ride in the wind and rain and london and get a little more battered.

Buuut then I'm also not that into practicality.

    So I bought this

And I think I like it more than the dolan ha!

Quickly built it up with parts from the Dolan and it looks something like this

Clearances at the back are nuts, wheel can't actually be pushed to the back of the dropouts.

Not sure how I'm going to build it up yet, will probably use a few of the bits from the Dolan. All black parts ect. Next thing to get is a bottom bracket, a nice seatpost and a nice saddle.

    Also have this

and the dolan here that I built for my gf so will update this thread when I sort out pics of both of them.

Did my track induction at Herne Hill yesterday so hopefully both these bikes will see actuall track use soon too, which will be fun.

  • Those Nelsons are so nice

  • Can you still buy nelsons new? Lovely build

  • Did you buy that nelson new?? those frames are the dog's bollocks

  • Thanks all, got it second hand. Had heard good things about the frames and liked the look of them.

The thick downtube on them looks awesome, proper hench.

Don't think you can buy them new anymore as the guy retired... Not sure on that tho

Frame came without the original fork but I think alpinas look really nice do will probably use the ones I have or get another pair if some come up cheap

  • The groove surrounds you, continue.

  • Huh?

  • Dolan and Nelson are both rad. What's going to take the brunt of the winter then?

  • Rig in Glasgow had one a couple of months back...might still have it if anyone is looking for one.

  • Probably the nelson, tho going to build is up with a more practical Wheelset.

Carbon tub is not the best idea for daily riding.

Probably put the front navigator back on, keep the Px wheel for the dolan and get a carbon rear wheel for it too.
Maybe get some mudguards on the nelson, anyone know of any good ones that would fit?

  • On the nelson love train! Looks so good!

  • Glad people love it, I'm quickly falling for it too! Rides smooth, set it up with all the stuff of the dolan and went for a quick test.

Will try take some nice pics tomorrow of it in full hhs mode

  • Always loved these, but never liked the original forks and I've wondered what alpinas would look like... especially in white to match the frame.

    They look good.

I reckon some 36/36h high flange silver hubs to box section rims would look great.

  • that dirt jump thing is epic, what is it?

  • @Ok123 Dirt jump thing is a mafia blackjack, it's the cheapest, shittest most fun bike I have ever bought.

Got it for £40 and it's a wreck but it is amazing to bomb about on.
Tried to true the rear wheel of it yesterday and snapped 3 spokes, so rebuilding the wheel is on the to do list.

Took some quick pics of the Nelson on lunch

It's a bit logo heavy for my liking at the moment, but with the matching front wheel should tone that down a bit.

Had a look at how to remove the decals from the PX wheel and it seems you can sand it down the laquer over it. Might try that.

Coming soon, new saddle (ratty selle italia turbo?)/seatpost, new grips, matching front wheel. Better tyres.

    Oh and spd's prob...

  • Cycled with you from Shoreditch to Elephant and Castle tonight. Bike is rad

  • Remember you guys, brooklyn or other thing? Will say hi properly next time I see you.

  • Brooklyn was me. Mate on an old graham weigh

  • Pic from track skills yesterday, rides great but I really need to get faster ha. Could keep up for the most but dropped out about 5 something laps from the end...

Also seat is ridiculously uncomfortable/I need better cycle shorts

  • Hi Guys,

I just wanted to share my experience with you after buying a Dolan frame.

3 years ago, after cycling daily on my canondale i opted for a single speed fixed wheel build, got all the parts as you do, top of the range and a canondale frame. Unfortunately it didnt have the horizontal drop so the guys at Perlie Rides, e8 (great guys) recommended a Dolan....i got it, built a fixed wheel and for

2.5 years enjoyed cycling. Until all of a sudden the frame snapped at the chain stay, which didnt just happen over night had been manifesting its self all the while.

4 weeks ago visited perlie rides, where they carried out the full inspection to verify the frame snapped at the chain stay, contacted dolan guy called frank, who frankly doesnt give a damn...explained the frame snapped in heavy london traffic, lucky to be alive, etc....dolan very surprised their frames break

3 weeks ago back and forth sending photos, proof of purchase, etc. unbelievable a steel frame snaps in 2.5 years, defintely not a vintage...lol, attitude of Dolan sucks....cant believe they are trying to blame This Dolan frame is clearly not fit for purpose. Frank at Dolan our frames dont break, ah yes they do ---

2 weeks ago sent the frame back, one week no reply....

today emailed no response, called oh we sent a reply email this am, hmmmm no you didnt....oh what bike was it the broken one, oh Mr Dolan do you get many broken bikes!!

Im not holding my breath that i will get a replacement frame, and nor do i want it...i just hope that my fellow London cyclist can avoid dealing with such a horrible, deceitful company and worse still avoid the mishap of a broken frame while commuting in London.

If i get the frame returned, not holding my breath about that either --- then does anybody want a broken dolan frame, or maybe just maybe a replacement dolan frame ---- i dont think i will put my good bike parts on such trash, think i will save for a proper frame!!!! lol

    Thanks for reading!!!

  • ^ Don't know if this is really the best place for that mate... Try the dolan thread.

Haven't heard of many pre cursa's breaking but my track champion has been strong for a couple of years of riding on the road. Personally I would recommend Dolan frames and it sounds like yours had a pretty good run.

Hope you get a new one tho! But I will be surprised, don't think Dolan insure there frames for road riding as they are meant to be track frames.

Will happily take the replacement frame off you :)

Having said that, when I bought my TC dolan where pretty slow on the email front. Just keep messaging I guess.

  • Nelson is only getting more hiphop.

  • Yeah son!

  • Probably the nelson, tho going to build is up with a more practical Wheelset.

Ha! Well it's not a tub I suppose...

Have you cleaned it up or sprayed it? Can't tell from the pic.

  • Like I said not so good at practicality ha

Just purchased some raceblades so is going in the right direction (apart from the trispoke)

This is it in a slightly more sensible guise.

Haven't done anything to it yet, was going to try and salvage the decals but couldn't manage to get them off easily.

Bought some new ones off ebay (that I hope are the right size) and gonna clean it up when I get them.
