I dont want to sound like a fan boy, I actually really like the look of Windows 8, and the Nokia Windows phones look great, but I do hate using Microsoft products with a passion.
Yea I wouldn't say "hating with a passion", but had to deal with some serious viruses twice this year on this windows 7 machine, and more than enough little bugs and hickups.
Also when I look at Yosemite, I really have to ask myself why I still deal with this ugly shit.
Windows 8 is a joke. -

I like the look of Windows 8, Metro asa design language makes sense...
If you want to make the switch @tina.kino grab a second hand Air, they go pretty cheap and are good little workhorses... -

I like the "new" Windows look on phones a lot, but can't deal with this on a desktop / laptop.
Yes, second hand Air is definately a consideration.

Weird thing going on, twice in last week...
I've been watching a movie from iTunes via apple TV and at random points my music has started playing where it was stopped/paused before the film?
Any explanations for that? (other than magnets)

What to do with an old Quad PowerMac (2.5Ghz G5, not Intel x86)? 2GB RAM (but easily upgraded).
Flog it on eBay, anyone want to make me an offer?

Has anyone had experience transferring large quantities of data (33ogb's) across to a NAS drive. Ive just brought a WD My cloud for my mum and it's estimated time is 219hrs! This while its connected via ethernet cable with a giga switch. Would it be quicker (possible) to do it via wifi.

My macbook hard drive has started making grinding, rustling noises, similar to those the broken CD drive makes. Anyone have an idea how long before the whole thing just dies? Macbook is about 4 years old.

I'm having a bit of an odd problem with MacBook Pros and iPhones.
I first noticed last year that when I put my iPhone on or near the left corner near the trackpad the screen would black out, the computer was old and I knew it was about to die anyway so I didn't really think much of it.
Now I have a new MBP and a new iPhone and I'm having the same problem, it doesn't happen as much but now even if the phone is within about a CM of the bottom left corner the screen sometimes blacks out, it's not really a reliable thing and it usually doesn't happen when I try and show someone but it's starting to piss me off.
I've tried other objects and phones and it seems to just be iphones that do this, also I've not seen it happen with any other MBP in the house.
Am I going crazy? Am I cursed? Is it just me?

(literally its just your phone making the connection to the little magnet thing that makes the computer think the lids been closed)

Clone it, today.

Is it worth trying to get it serviced, or get anything replaced? I have backed up all my images and writing. Is 4 years about the lifespan of one of these things?
-
• #6847
Hard Drives aren't serviceable items. They have a finite lifespan measured in wear, not time. Tbh it's impossible to guess how long any of them will last.
Once they start showing signs of age though, failure is imminent (<24hrs, in my experience).
If you don't already use Time Machine or regularly clone your drive with some free software such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, do it ASAP.
Overclockers should be able to sell you a good new HDD for your Macbook.
The rest of the machine is probably absolutely fine. You can replace the HDD yourself using an iFixit online guide. -

Thanks for all your advice. Buying and replacing the HDD myself would not be economical, as I have absolutely no knowledge of these things and it would therefore cost alot in time. Would you be able to recommend somewhere in London that would do this for me?

Find a guide on ifixit.com, buy a kit with hdd in tool, spend 1hr tops doing it. Just be careful and it'll be fine.

^What he said. It really isn't very difficult or time-consuming.
Cheers budyy, someone else mentioned this in another thread, think they are going to talk me through it all this eve, I'm like a mum on wondoooowsss... I assume hibernation is like sleep? I think OS X sleep files are a few gigs too. I have 8gb ram so apprx 16gb used by this lark would make sense.
