It's quite few years ago now and I expect the tyres were pretty basic and that they were probably at too high a pressure, but I do remember thinking something didn't feel right: squirmy and unsettling, enough to make me swap them out.

I have very good experiences with 35c slick tyres on narrow rims - cornering, rolling resistance all-up.
