How To Lock Your Bike

  • yeah true... but as with all these things if someone wants to nick it, they only have to pop over the road to a hardware shop and buy a Torx key.

    good deterrent for opportunists though.

  • They would try and nick the easiest bike to break through, rather than going to a shop and get that keys.

Quite like the Allen bolt with the Middle filled in, pretty uncommon to find a key for that.

  • I also bought security allen bolts to replace the two saddle clamp bolts on my Thomson post. Can't be arsed taking a pic, you get the idea.

  • I'm getting those bolts asap. Second case this week of people bringing bikes in with whole front ends missing. The last one was a caad10 with full 6800 and Zipp. Gone!

  • any idea what locks they used? riding a swanky bike to work with zipp wheels and 6800 - locking it on street, is just asking for it to be pinched.

  • How are they trying to put Restrap et al out of business?

By coming up with a lock that wouldn't fit so easily in a holster.

  • Anyone know of good locking places in bank ideally near the Royal Exchange? I've got a month there and the stands are rammed. Currently only locked to the stand with one lock because of lack of space

  • Mini fahg but still. Now paranoid of losing the front end after reading this thread.

  • Ball bearings as an extra deterrent or better, some semi secure M hex nuts from bolt company I can't remember name of. Really good stuff, I'll look them up when I get home.

    I work next door.

For the past five months, there has been a modern crabon colnago road bike locked up everyday with a fahg mini around top tube and bike stand, nothing securing wheels, seatpost, or the fizik something-or-other perched atop.

No one has bothered it yet.

  • @chung I saw that locked up earlier today! I think you'll be fine, there are so many expensive road bikes locked up around there, always with terrible locking technique or cheapo locks.

  • @Chak @ptr
    Cheers guys.
That definitely puts me at a bit more ease. I'll see if I can find some ball bearings and seal them in with some candle wax as a stop gap. Cheers!

  • We are getting a few of these in Levy soon, not as secure as a proper sheffield stand but have blueberries planted in them so a fair bit prettier, even has a little bit of advice on how to lock on the side.

  • Looks like whoever took the promo picture ignored the advice and has possibly put a D lock around the seatpost though.

  • @snottyotter hope they don't plant nettles or something with thorns.

  • Blueberries, apparently they have pretty different colours throughout the year, it's some local group dedicated to using spaces to grow food. It's all getting a bit Chorlton round these parts.

  • Seems to be a thing at the moment - my mate had the front end of his Colnago nicked in Soho (10 sp Carbon record) and then a week later the Front end of his other road bike (9 sp Ultegra, thompson stem) in St John St.

  • I locked my bike to one of those on St john St recently - busy afternoon, all other stands were taken, so I was a bit suspicious as to why that one was free. After locking up to it i gave the hoop a wiggle - it just lifted straight out of the plant base.

I assume the hoop was originally welded to the planter, but having been underground for some time the welds had failed.

  • So burying steel in moist dirt corrodes it? I don't think I know the people putting these out but I'll try and find out so they can take precautions before filling them.

  • and have fucked their rear rack in the process?

    @IR duhfuq?

  • I'm currently having a bit of a conundrum regarding the locking situation at the new flat I'm about to move into. Sadly bringing the bike up in the flat isn't an option due to a lack of space in my bedroom, and a flatmate who sadly isn't as keen on bikes as I am.

There is a secure bike store where residents can lock their bike. This can only be accessed with a key, and if you're already inside the building, however I'm obviously still going to lock the bike.

The stands to lock to in the bike storage are sadly those terrible ones where the metal of the stand is only in the proximity of the front wheel. I've added some pictures of the area below. The flatmate says there have been no thefts of cycles at all in the 2 years he's been there, however I am conscious that my bikes look like they will be the most expensive in there by some margin.

My first thoughts were to get 2 big chain/padlock combos so that I can lock the frame and front wheel to the stand. However, I currently own 2 mini and 1 large U lock, and so I was thinking that if I bought one more large U lock, I could lock downtube to front wheel and then front wheel to stand. I know that you could saw through the wheel if you really want, however I'm thinking that it's likely to put someone off - at that point they're going to go for one of the other bikes secured only by a U lock through the quick-release front wheel.

Thoughts on this? Any better suggestions that aren't going to cost the world?

    Any better suggestions

    Learn to sleep standing up?

Bike in the stand rear wheel up, lock from rear triangle to metalwork and lock front wheel to frame?
