I posted about this a couple of years ago, but because I was living abroad at the time, organising things was just way too difficult. Now I'm living in the UK again, I fancy really giving this a shot...
In summary: The cyclothon is in the form of a 1,332 km relay race along Iceland’s ring road.
You get to ride around this stunning country under the perpetual summer sun. You get to battle wind, rain, possibly snow, wind, never-ending roads, bits of gravel, wind...
Oh yeah, and sponsorship money goes to Save The Children (Iceland).
The race is mostly on paved roads, but there are occasional bits of gravel. I reckon a CX bike would do it, but an MTB might be worth the trouble too. I'll look into this.
I'd be considering entering this as a 4-man relay group. At least one rider has to be on the road at all times. A team car with two additional drivers/'staff' follows for support and rest. Entry fee is currently about £250 per team, which I think it pretty reasonable.
Finally, I have contacts in Iceland. If this looks like a goer, I'll be working on sponsorship and trying to subsidise things like hiring the support car, accommodation, etc. Oh, and we'll probably be covered by an Icelandic newspaper.
So... is anyone else stupid enough to (legitimately) come and join me for this?
No, the title isn't a mistake.

Full rules for 2014 can be found here, although they are subject to change in 2015:
