Miche primato JIS/ISO

Posted on
  • My Miche Primato Advanced crankset has just arrived, with JIS written on the crank arm. Is this possible? I thought all Miche cranksets were ISO?

  • Italian...and...ISO...to the best of my knowledge.

  • I got my Mash Histogram from Wiggle around christmas. It came with Miche primato BB and crankset and both have JIS printed on them, so I guess Miche switched from ISO to JIS. I'm about to change the BB to a Shimano UN54. Guess I'll write something here if i run into any ISO/JIS compatibility related issues or chainline problems.

  • ISO
    115 mm

    JIS
    107 mm – 110 mm

  • Worth noting that all both the square taper bbs on their site are pictured as having a flanged driveside cup.

I'm sure I heard something about them switching bb manufacturer because of the issue of it moving unwontedly.

I've replaced a few with 107mm un5? units and had chainline remain decent.

  • Is my conclusion right below? I'm 'learning' quickly and it’s hurting my head.

My 165mm primato crankset also came with JIS written on them but I only read / noticed this after my LBS fitted them to the ISO 107 Primato BB I supplied (I’d assumed the crankset was ISO). This resulted in only 1-2mm crankarm/chainstay clearance. Not enough. I read on Sheldon Brown that JIS crank on ISO BB brings the crank arm 4.5mm further in /closer to the frame. So if I now get the same size 107mm JIS BB I’d have 5.5-6.5mm crank/chain stay clearance (1-2 + 4.5mm lost by JIS crank on ISO BB).

Is my thinking correct? I only want to but one more BB. Appreciate the advice.

(Will have a 107mm ISO Primato BB for sale if anyone’s interested. Fitted but unused)

  • ^ Probably, but the fact your cranks have been fitted to ISO now may cause you problems.

I think it's best to stick to one type of taper only so you may be better putting them on a longer ISO bb.

That said, I've fitted used Dura Ace 7600 track cranks that came from a japanese keirin dealer (and so had most likely been used with the correct ISO taper bb) on ebay to a JIS taper bottom bracket and they seem to be fine.

  • I read on Sheldon Brown that JIS crank on ISO BB brings the crank arm 4.5mm further in /closer to the frame.

This concurs roughly with my experience with using a shimano JIS crank on a Primato ISO BB and had similar results using a stronglight JIS crank on a Campagnolo veloce ISO BB... although I didn't measure down to the 0.5mm

  • Upping a bit old thread but...

I have a Miche Primato crankset, bought it used from a friend in June 2013. He said it's JIS but I'm not so sure anymore. The drivetrain kept some noise during driving season, could be just chain + rear cog too.

The only markings on crankarms are "170 1109". Any idea what the 1109 could mean? Aluminium type? Should they be marked "JIS", as some people here say their cranks are? Are ISO cranks marked?

I have been riding them on JIS BB so far.

  • It's JIS. I just put one on my folding frankenbike and chainline is fine with a 107 JIS BB.

  • Well I have 44mm chainline with 107 JIS BB.

e: after quick search, this seems to be normal chainline...

  • Upping the thread again. Just about to fit some miche advanced cranks to my new frame. Shimano UN55 seems (107mm) seems to be the standard choice. Semi-considering shelling out on an Sugino 75 but not sure if its worth it. Frame is an ex time-trial dolan (carbon). Advice?

  • (Ignoring the fact I probably should have spent more on the cranks)
