at the same time, while you definately have to pay for goods and services received, they should be able to invoice you. How else can you, and they, satisfy the taxman?
You should ring them, get the name of the person you speak to, say you are willing to pay on receipt of an invoice, and follow this up immediately with an email confirming this. Having worked both sides of this exchange, relying only on emails is crap, voice to voice is the way forward.
Likewise, get a receipt immediately you hand over the money.
