  • I'd like to lug line the frame.

Suggestions on the color and where to get the color from?

Yellow seems to be the natural choice, others?

  • Gold would go so well!

  • I think so too

  • I lugged lined my tandem frame and some forks in the past. Not easy. For the tandem, I did not have good space to move around, busy room in my flat, and I had to cheat a bit (re-covering the gold lining with mat black of the frame where gold had gone too far...) which was OK for that specific project, the overall result is consistent with the rest, but this would be disastrous in the case of the immaculate frame you have here. It would be best to strip the bike so you can move it around easily, and get good access throughout, and always have good support for your painting arm / wrist.
I was a lot more successful with the forks (this was on a holdsworth actually!) because it's so much easier to move them around than a tandem frame half built with steel cranksets and forks!
In both case I used this:

The forks were done years ago and it has not moved at all.

  • For the colour, that kind of era frame would have white lug lining maybe? Gold would work too I thing and be a nice touch with your arrow groupset. I don't feel the yellow, but this could be just my lack of vision.

  • White lug lining on my Dave Russel (which is not mine anymore), paintwork was done by Colourtech (I did not know Mario at the time!)

  • Mmm will think about stripping the frame again! :)
Really don't want to do that.

White should be nicer that gold 'cause of the white decals.
But gold would look more subtle (less contrast) and, yeah, would match the Golden Arrow.

  • And regarding the difficulty, I can try a bit on the Hugh Porter frame as that one needs painting anyway :D

  • Dd you ever see this picture?

    Before:

  • I think I saw it once on your sale thread :) thanks for putting it back up!! I'll add it to my flickr set.
Just to have them close -> after:

(I've since put VO mudguards and changed the bars angle - when I find and put Golden Arrow brake levers, I'll update with a more recent picture)

  • How it looks now with VO mudguards (still need to set them up properly and cut them down [notice where it attaches to the dropouts) and different bar handle:

One thing that keeps happening is that the headset keeps coming loose even after I brought it to a LBS where they properly put the headset crown race (I wasn't able to slam it all the way down) and tighten it up (I only have one spanner)
Hints on why that might happen?

  • Sometimes it's best to do it yourself.

On a recent visit to @mrgumby I tightened the headset myself, took 10s. It's been tight and nice since then. Headset didn't come loose once so far.

  • Sometimes it's best to do it yourself.>

I had a recurring problem like this on my Dave Russel.

Barry Witcomb said it could have been the headtube not properly faced. He rectified that for me when I had the frame re-sprayed thru him at Colourtech. Never happen after.

  • Indeed one error I made was to not face headset and BB.
I had a local shop fix the headset but I didn't ask if they also faced it, I hope they did. It's going fine so far though.

The Moser will have the BB and headset properly setup by a LBS :) Just asked and they'll do it for 20 pounds each.

  • So I got a Cinelli cockpit (100mm stem and handlebars) and the Shimano GA brake levers for this and I'd like to put thinner handlebar tape maybe (but I'd like to try save the black Cinelli Cork that's on there)

What do you guys think? Should I go for the non-aero GA to complete the full group or should I keep it aero?

  • I'm with Julob gold would go well, my Monsoon is luglined with gold https://www.flickr.com/photos/fixedwheelnut/1849638556/in/set-72157602875086056

  • Nice Monsoon!

Yeah, I remember I played as a kid with plenty of lug lining pens and never knew what they were about. So I hope to still find one at my parents when I go visit them for Christmas. Then I'll get the gold and white and try both. White goes well with the decals, gold with the red.
Your decals are gold too, so you had little room for play.

  • Looks good, i think you should have the period GA levers and cloth tape. i have cloth tape on two of my bikes one because its from the 70's and the other because i wanted it to be retro.

  • I've got some white Benotto.

I've been wondering about cloth tape for a while now. how is it?

  • its ok, not a squashy as cork ribbon gets dirty quite quickly but i like the used look. lol

  • :-)

Ok I'll think about it. I need to find someone who has it on and check it out.

  • I convinced myself to try cloth. Black coth. Anyone has black Newbawms ?

  • Found it on eBay. Less than 15 quids.

  • So, got this new tape and a 100mm Cinelli stem. Might look for a better handlebar too.
Also ordered lug lining pen and paint (white, sorry, but cables are white and decals are white too, didn't like gold lining).

Will also put up Golden Arrow brake levers as well. But before I put the tape on, I'll give them a try. They don't look very comfy (non-aero Gipiemme ones on the Moser do not look, but are comfy anyway), so want to try them first.

  • Ok got everything now. This NOS Shimano GA brake levers were the last thing I needed.
Soon I'll re-do my cockpit with the Cinelli stem and bar, cloth black tape and these
