  • I have some of those cheap shimano mtb spd's. 8 months usage or so and even with the screws tightened right up they unclip if I pull up sharply on them. If I buy a more expensive shimano spd will they hold tighter, or I need to buy those other ones that fixie skidders all seem to use (time atac?)?

  • Could be worn cleats as opposed to pedals. Generally I find the cleats wear before the pedals but I do rotate between about three bikes.

  • Pop down to polo and check some other SPD pedals out, there's a bunch of us with them tightened right up for comparisons.

Which cleats? The multi-release ones will unclip if you pronate/supinate, if they are the problem then you can usually fix it just by switching to the single-release cleat.

  • A +1 for single release cleats from me. Also, i've found i can use a lower spring setting with them, and that helps the cleats last longer. (If you set it too low though you can come out by pulling back and up though.)
