Thank you for this. It is great to get some good advice. I hadn't really thought too much about buying a new bike as I thought that anything in that price range would not be any good. Maybe I was wrong and the one from merlincycles certainly looks like a good buy.
I am quite hands on (I do my own repairs on my old Ford Escort) and am not overwhelmed by the idea of maintaining a bike or eventually building up to replacing parts or 'upgrading'. I was actually looking forward to learning about bikes through that side of things. I have some knowledge of bike maintenance already from years of keeping pass-me-down bikes on the road. It is just having the time in the first instance of knowing what is 'good' and 'value for money' and what is not.
Having said that, maybe I will go for something like a Merlin or Felt and buy something that I might consider a project in a few months as a second bike to mess about with.
