Well, in 2014 an Aero rim is at least 60 mm deep... anything less is shallow. The Zipp 303 (45 mm rims) are used for the cobbled classics and the hilly stages of the Tour, go figure

You can improve the aerodynamics at any depth, the old 30mm deep Zipp 101s were better than many poorly designed 60mm deep rims.
