planet x track rattling noise when drivetrain is not under load.

  • have built a planet x track bike with full miche primato drivetrain, Izumi 1/8 track chain.
when on load it rides lovely but when off load there is a loud rattle. from the looks of it it is where the chain mates with each tooth on the front chainring and rear sprocket.
has anybody else suffered from this?? and is there a way to stop this happening?

    cheers

  • Are you using the adjustment screws in the dropouts? These can rattle a fair bit, even on the track. Make sure they are either taken out or screwed in to be snug.

Are you using a 3/32 sprocket? A 1/8 chain will move around on it and be quite noisy.

It could be that what you are describing is chain suck. Are you using a worn or cheap sprocket? Using something like a Dura Ace or Phil Wood instead will help.

You could also try running your chain a touch tighter.

  • Also - green tyres and bartape with a white saddle... :-/

  • the chain adjusters are well tight lol. It's a 1/8th miche sprocket. Chain glides on and off the teeth like a dream. I may try cranking the chain tighter this evening.
Green tape has gone. Changed for carbon bars with black tape. Waiting on te right saddle.

  • All brand new sprocket and chainset.

  • chainring bolts tight? Those Miche bolts are so shit. Always come loose.

  • oh really?? i have some Ti ones at home that i could change over to.
ill try to explain the noise as best as can.
you know when your on a roller coaser and hetting hoisted upwards by the chain
dagga dagga dagga dagga dagga dagga dagga dagga ect.... but at the speed that the chain is going round.
    thats the noise.

  • Um. PX track frames really amplify any drivetrain noise - I think what you are describing is just that. Izumi chains are fairly loud too.

  • Ahh I see. Thanks for the info chap. Still gunna tighten the chain tonight.

  • Sounds pretty normal to me, as Dan said a frame like that will amplify noise and what you describe sounds like standard noises that fixed bikes can make when slowing down without a brake.

My bikes usually make it, drenching the chain in oil can stop it but there's no point because it'll get dirty and wear out quicker, I found KMC 510 chains to be quieter than izumi but I just trust izumi more.

  • carbon is an acoustic amplifier welcome to the planet x club!

  • Cheers guys. I must say that the Planet X is a nice responsive ride. I use a steel Fixie to commute that some guy in a Nissan decided to crash into yesterday and the Planet X pulls so much better and is so nippy. No brakes standard!!
Just looking for some alpina drops now to finish it so I can try herne hill

  • Izumi Super Loudness

  • Also check your inner tube valves as they rattle if the lock 'nut' isn't tight against the rim.

I have tubs on my Campagnolo Pista wheels and the valves rattle & make noise

  • Ahh I see. Thanks for the info chap. Still gunna tighten the chain tonight.

I would suggest the opposite. You want some slack in the chain.

  • An overly tight chain will be loud, true.. but so will and overly slack one.

  • Chainline?

  • Chainline is spot on. Im really anal when it comes to things like that.
With regards to chain tension have found there is a sweet spot on my fixie but the planet x is noisey whatever the case. the only time its quiet is when the chain is off.

  • Try putting a super toughness chain on there - sounds like a tractor

  • @dan

An overly tight chain will be loud, true.. but so will and overly slack one.

True - The chain in the first pic looks spot-on IMO.

  • I really rate the Izumi chains. I have a rubbis halfords one on my daily runner and it does the job with a lashing of WD40 (great for the rain)
    But the Izumi is uncomparable.

  • Any advice for a wheelset?? I want some Planet X 82mm. I think they'll look cool. In thinking clinchers rather than tubs as if I wear through the tyre via stopping it's easier to change.

  • ...with a lashing of WD40 (great for the rain)...

But not your chain: use proper chain lube.

  • Do PX do 82mm track clinchers?

  • This is my beater the chain was 4 quid. When It gets noises I'll change it.
