  • And in fact you would need to go even slower than that if they could go from green to red in an instant.

    That's the point.

  • And in fact you would need to go even slower than that if they could go from green to red in an instant.

    I am liking the sound of this.

  • Secondly, amber have the same meaning as red, the only problem is that everything think they mean "oh go on, three more cars through before we go red".

  • Your point is that every single vehicle (bikes included) would have to slow to walking pace when approaching a green light? And even then would never be able to cross a junction without risking it turning red.

    Yeah, good one.

  • You would have to do the same with amber.

  • Just have tank traps at every set of lights. That'll fucking learn everyone - overnight, half the population will be sitting by the roadside wondering wtf just turned their bike/car/horse into a crumpled pile of puke.

  • @Brun According to Motor Lawyers;

    The obligation on the motorist is to stop, unless the light is green, in which case you may proceed only if it is clear and safe to do so. If the amber light is illuminated, a vehicle must stop, unless it has already passed the white stop line or the vehicle is so close to the stop line, that coming to a halt might cause an accident. If the red light is showing, then you must stop behind the stop line in all circumstances.

  • Secondly, amber have the same meaning as red

    ^ As you've just quoted yourself, Ed, the meaning isn't quite the same, as it also includes the additional caveats you've included in the quote. Red is 'stop, no ifs or buts'. Amber is 'stop, except when ...'.

  • Amber is 'stop, except when ...'

    ...you're over the solid line, which are largely ignored until the light is red.

  • On the other hand, according to The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002:

    (d)the green signal shall indicate that vehicular traffic may proceed beyond the stop line and proceed straight on or to the left or to the right;

    (e)the amber signal shall, when shown alone, convey the same prohibition as the red signal, except that, as respects any vehicle which is so close to the stop line that it cannot safely be stopped without proceeding beyond the stop line, it shall convey the same indication as the green signal or green arrow signal which was shown immediately before it;

    No mention of proceeding on green only if it's clear.

  • That's a fair point, though it is generally wiser to approach with caution than the blindingly go through it.

    (e) made it a lots clearer, same prohibition, but different restriction to the stop line.

  • Yes, as Brun quotes, 'stop, unless you can't stop safely'.

    When you're already over the solid line, none of this matters, anyway, as, erm, you're already over the solid line. :)

  • You seriously slow down to 10mph approaching green traffic lights?

    @.Keeley I freewheel so my speed goes from my usual 18-22mph down to 10-15mph. Maybe it's different in a car, the accelerator only has on/off settings to keep you at 30mph or is that cruise control?

    I think your driving style is more of an issue.
    And in fact you would need to go even slower than that if they could go from green to red in an instant.

    This is exactly why you can't have unrestricted autobahn like motorways and 20mph zones full of cameras and yellow box junctions are here to stay. Just because you can doesn't mean you should, you are your worst enemy.

  • FFS we all know that Amber really means put your foot down, the lights are changing. Quoting pedantic things such as the law will not change that.

  • That being said, the traffic in London is obviously a lot more than in Glasgow. The only times I've seen amber gambling with multiple cars coming through even after that is Hermiston Gait outside Edinburgh

    I'm in Glasgow and saw single cars jumping reds at 2 junctions on my way into town today and on the way home (rush hour) there were too many instances to count but I did count 3 cars through on red on Pollockshaws rd at the junction near the Tramway.

  • You sound very young and tremendously informed.

  • tgif

  • Nope, it just sounds like you've been polishing your GBs in anger.

  • Euph?

  • No, pretty direct...

  • Some spectacularly dangerous RLJ'ing at the crossing in front of Parliament today. By doing it there they are just providing MPs and peers with 'evidence' (deliberate inverted commas) of cyclists' irresponsibility, which will all get dragged out in the next Parliamentary debate.

  • @.Keeley I freewheel so my speed goes from my usual 18-22mph down to 10-15mph. Maybe it's different in a car, the accelerator only has on/off settings to keep you at 30mph or is that cruise control?>

  • Um, don't know. If other users of my chosen mode of transport do a thing which makes it possible that it will get less investment in future / be subject to further regulation / attract more hostility from others, am I annoyed? Yes.

  • There has been a cunt shift, from when you were born, as a non cunty baby, to now, when you are a cunt. #cuntshift

  • Sorry, that was wong. Less cunty baby.
