Very much this. I do what I can in this respect - my old LBS was the furthest away out of four but I used it anyway because it's good to keep money local and they were good. Harder to justify using the LBS at my work as it's a cycle surgery, and not even a very good one as far as they go.

I prefer to support an LBS because the benefits of supporting a localised economy go beyond the immediate benefit to my wallet. Admittedly though, some LBS don't make it easy. It's good to be able to do a lot of the mechanical stuff yourself, but it's invaluable to have someone around who can really help out when things start getting a bit finnicky and complicated.
