My daily is a carlton clubman, converted to fixed. I'll post some pics up or it ps various iterations (good and bad). Picked it up for a fiver covered in snow in the back of a bike shop 5 years ago. Loved it ever since.

Bought racing Carlton in summer blue colour from Sargeant and Co in north london. The very same day cycled round town until evening then went to tescos to buy some things for dinner, came out to unlock the bike only to find it stolen. sad times. It was lightest and most responsive racing bike I'd experienced.

Is this thread dead? I hope not... Just bought this lovely carlton.
But what is it and how will I tell the age?
I am going to build it up as a classic looking ss for my gf.

Going to echo Spokesmann's thoughts.
My first proper bike after a Grifter was a secondhand Carlton Continental with chrome decals, only a 5 speed with steel rims, the short mudguards, cottered cranks, used to ride it to school and little adventures off road and poaching. It was metallic red.
Hit a car blind reversing out of a lane and ended up on it's roof, top tube/down tube got bent as did the forks.
Still rode it home and around.
In hindsight i wish i had kept the headtube badge.
Mine wasn't a fancy lightweight racing model, but i belive this is where my love of lugged steel frames started. And why i keep coming back to them.Hulsroy, that looks a saveable finish, is the gold Carlton logo a transfer or painted ?

I can't tell you, I would guess transfer. I LOVE the colour way and decals. It is pretty scratched up, but she will be using it for everyday use to thats is fine. I like patina anyway.

Great looking frame, have identified it as a Franco Suisse model, most probably 1960s vintage.
Who else is with me on thinking we need to show some good English marques from the past some love? Starting with Carlton, because they aren't appreciated enough.
So, post here with your pictures from the past or present, or reminisce, or whatever.
