stans alpha 400's? nice and stiff, light and look good with stickers peeled off, spokesmanwheels does them for 66.99 built onto hubs
-
• #78
I'd get Flo30's for this if it were still my bike, take the stickers off and wallop - a wheelset whose closest rival is the Zipp 202 Firecrest but with a winter friendly alloy braking track for 10% of the cost.

They're a bit pricey at almost £80 a pop, I was thinking more like £50 a rim
The ultimate wheels are Belgiums Plus. £160 more I would think well worth it. I had A23 in the house. Sold them on.

eh? flo30 wheelset for £160? Doubt it.
-
• #81
20% then.
-
• #82
It's still a fucking bargain.

2 x A23 vs 2 x Belgiums Plus

Never ever save on wheels.

That's the magic bung that's designed to be used without spacers above the stem on a crabon steerer.
'dale are actually pretty specific about not using spacers above the steerer.
-
• #87
Why not?
-
• #88
I believe the idea is that the magic bung braces the steerer. That top cap thing is a tight fit in the steerer and shares the clamping force of the stem. If you use spacers above the stem it partially loses it's ability to brace, depending on how many you use. I think - but I've no proof - the steerers on the 'dale forks are designed to be used with this type of bung, as a 'system', hence SI, and not using that type of bung could result in a fiery death, or something.
(there's a technote that goes into this somewhere, but I can't find it).
-
• #89
Yeah, that's basically it. Quite a tight fit into the steerer - that resists the clamping force.
-
• #90
I'd always use a (max 5mm) spacer above the stem - even with that bung, as many a stem is not totally flat on top / doesn't interface well with a top-cap.

I'm with @Howard on the Planet-X brakes. They are shit, a pain in the arse to set up and, even with decent pads like Swissstop Green, offer no real braking power. God help you if you ever need to make an emergency stop with them.
@dan will agree with me - I sold them to him for cheap and he decided they were shit too.

Fuck Archetypes, there's something about them I just hate, I seem them on every other bike these days too.
This in spades. The writing is aweful and under laquer but mainly it's the horrible looking roundy-but-pointy profile.
The problem is thyre wide, not to heavy, not too expensive easily available and come in different colours, drillings, nmsw/msw...
...basically the goldie locks of rims.
I'd think your defo want a 28h rear no?
Wha about those 3t wheelset everyone has been mentioning in the road wheel thread. Perfect training wheel surly

^ funniest forum post for a while. Though I am pretty pissed.

No problem, more like looking for an example.

+1
They are good at everything except stopping you. Pinching the rim with your thumb and forefinger would probably provide more stopping power.
SRAM brakes really are excellent, there's no need to go elsewhere. Groupset brakes ftw.. Almost without exception.

Oh Yes please, I'll PM you.
I wont be running any spacers above that stem because the caps stits so flat, like atomically flat

I think Halo Aerowarriors should get more love, they were 24mm before it was cool. Admittedly they only go down to a 32h but by god they're tough, i've totally hammered mine (and pepe did before hand) for years and they're still as true as when I got them.

EE's and ciamillo pop up on WW and BR quite frequently ..

i found those planetx brakes also a pain to setup correctly.
stem is quite heavy in relation to the rest!
24/28 for winter, not like a handful of spokes is going to make a meaningful difference to weight/drag. Then buy some tarty carbon in the spring. Sorted.
