• Hey I'm a newbie. After having a nice looking geared road bike stolen off of me, which coincidentally 75% of the gears didn't work, I've decided to go for a simple plain looking fixed gear bicycle. My budget is tight to be honest and I didn't even want to go over £100 but definitely don't mind going 2nd hand if that helps.

However I've found a brand new bike on gumtree for less than £200 and wondered if anyone has anything to say about the quality and whether I should be avoiding it like the plague (or ebola) or if it's decent for the money. Here it is -> http://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/brand-new-single-speed-fixed-gear-fixie-road-bike/1082605621

Other recommendations of course would be appreciated and I do plan to build a bike one day when I have time as it looks like good fun. In general for now though I plan to buy a bike to do regular short commutes 1-3 miles and occasional longer commutes around 6miles in London.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mark

  • Not seen those before, but it has a warranty... but you don't know what that's worth. I'd stay away from that because asides from looking a bit shit, it's got the sort of 'style'over substance 'features' that shit products use to attract unknowing punters.

Personally I'd look for a 2nd hand bike and then replace parts as they wear. My top choice would be an on-one pompino. Decent clearance, mounts for mudguards and racks, cheap. Dolan are also cheap and decent so they should be available 2nd hand at a decent price as are the alu Specialized Langsters. Charge Plugs are pretty sturdy and came with basic, but sensible parts new. Basically any popular bikes sold by Evans.

Also if you can push your budget go £200 it should give you more options. Classifieds on here are a good bet and people are likely to comment if someone is selling a pile of shit.

Here's a Plug with mudguards mounts in large:http://www.lfgss.com/conversations/257002/#comment11899146

Ribble with mudguard mounts (in case you haven't picked up, I'd
    recommend mudguards ;)

  • May as well be a no-logo.

  • Plenty of bargains on ebay just picked up a single speed raleigh pub bike yesterday £70 quid

  • Thanks for the help so far guys, much appreciated. I know No Logo got a bad rep because they fell apart and the bike I've been looking at looks only minimally better built. Was the ride also very bad on them?

  • That there Charge and Ribble are great deals

  • Avoid it, in the long run(3 months) it will cost you more. Expect to replace the brakes, expect the freewheel to go and be a shit dicta you can't remove, expect tyres to be shit and replace them asap, expect the rim tape to be non-existant and get a ton of pinch flats, expect everything to feel that bit cheaper. Buy cheap buy twice...

  • Save up and get a Charge Plug.

  • ^^ another good option.

In fact there are loads on ebay at the moment.

Specilized tri-cross, light on deets but it looks pretty good condition http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/121461341801?_mwBanner=1#

As I said if you stick to the bigger brands that people would have bought on a c2w then you've got a better chance of good deals.
