How worried should i be? (toptube ding)

Posted on
  • I won this schwinn track on ebay after getting a little over excited at finally finding a frame in my size. I chose to ignore the fairly sizeable ding in the top tube but im a bit worried as to how this is going to compromise structural integrity of the frame - i dont want to spend my life worrying it is about to fold in on me.

I have read that steel frames can live long and happy lives even with dings such as this but i would greatly appreciate some advice.

  • wouldnt bother me personally. i dont think theres much stress in the frame at that point - if at all.

even if it did, its metal and metal is flippin strong - it wouldnt just give way.

i had a big crack appear on the top tube of an old gt back in the day close the head tube - rode it for a couple weeks with this crack and it didnt really get any worse. it was probably there for ages before it was noticed anyway.

  • @dogtemple Thanks very much for the advice. looks like you help a lot of folks with their technical/ mechanical queries on here – Chapeau to you sir!

  • a negative shim will sort that out

  • Hi @rive_gauche, excuse my ignorance but can you describe a negative shim and how i would use it to get rid of the ding? a brief google search hasn't enlightened me much. thanks
