I have no doughnut memories to contribute, but when I was growing up we did have a covered market with a tripe stall where you could buy, by weight, the best pork scratchings the world has ever seen. Inches long with a quarter-inch of artery destroying deliciousness along the underside, nothing like the pale imitation you get in plastic sachets in pubs.
Alas the market is now a shadow of what it was, the tripe shop is long gone, and I am a vegetarian.
