  • I'd buy a Sansa Clip instead. Not much difference in size, fits more and, if you want, you can actually choose which track you want.

Well the Sansa Clip is about half the price of the Shuffle and boasts tons more functionality, but it's double the height, double the thickness and it's too much for what I want. The iPod is perfect with the exception of the dance required to update it.

  • I did with the previous generation shuffle, no problems. When I last looked into it there were issues with the ones with voiceover. Also managed to do it with an old touch witha few workarounds.

That's good to hear. Seems there are no issues with the voiceover one (Shuffle 4th gen) when using that script I linked to in my previous post.

  • Just use a Sansa clip.

Although... the clip itself is liable to eventually break if you're mountain biking or doing anything severe.

  • Heh, and you know I love living with Linux and making other stuff (Garmin) work with simple tricks.

But the iPod range + Linux... never consistently works. It starts off fine, and then it will fuck up. Eventually you'll buy a Sansa Clip anyway as you'll want something that works, and the shuffle will become a lovely adornment to your desk.

  • Ok so I'm coming round to the idea of the Sansa clip. What do you guys personally recommend, the Clip+ or Clip Zip/Sport?

  • I only have the Clip+, but the Clip Sport looks like a much nicer version, but the online reviews seem to suggest it feels cheaper.

That's hard to imagine... the Clip+ was damn cheap in feeling already. I'd probably buy the Clip+ again... it ain't pretty, and the menus are fiddly, but it works perfectly, sounds great, plays anything, and can be knocked around without care.

  • I'd like something small like that but with gps+strava so I don't have to carry my phone as well

  • Most people just get one of the really cheap and shitty Garmins, such as the old Edge 200:
    https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/sports/cycling/edge-200/prod90675.html

These can be used to record stuff, and then sync'd at the end of the ride. 14 hour battery life, and it just works.

You can pick them up cheaper on eBay as people are busy upgrading to big displays and low battery life.

  • Sansa clip looks interesting. I'm thinking about something cheap for Tour Divide next year. I never ride with music normally, but I'm gonna be in the saddle 16-20 hours a day for three weeks.

Does it charge from standard USB? As I'll have a dynamo hub with a buffer battery to charge GPS/Camera/Phone...

  • Yup, standard USB.

If you're doing a long tour I can lend you a player: http://www.cowonglobal.com/product_wide/COWOND2PLUS/product_page_1.php

It has 50+ hours battery life with MP3 files, around 30+ hours with FLAC files. Also charges from USB, and the SD cards allow for insane capacity (I use a 128GB one in my main player).

  • Thanks! That looks great David, I might take you up on that offer (nearer the time) as I don't generally have need for a player like that. Anything with extended battery life will be great. It looks like a good size too, can just have it in my pocket without it getting annoying.

It'll also be useful for the flights to Calgary, El Paso to San Francisco then SF to LDN. Awesome!

  • ah good idea. I'll look into that

  • i offically hate sansa clips....
i think theyve dropped the ball on build quality.
1st one lasted a good 9 months (just died) and at that price and being one of the only uber small non itunes mp3 player i bought another that lasted just passed 2 months (left ear went). so i bought a 3rd which i managed to resurrect only after the 4th suicide bombed my usb hub taking 3 ports and itself to a magic electronic smoke heaven on its first charge...
the 3rd one, is actually the sport... which STUPIDLY cant be locked so while exercising (or riding if thts where youd use it) if it lightly bumps something, it changes operations.

  • linux question,
    actually specifically ubuntu:
i want to run my tablet (Transformer) as a remote access (vnc?) to the pc and i cant crack it.
    is there an easy way?

  • .

  • Heh, and you know I love living with Linux and making other stuff (Garmin) work with simple tricks.

There are simple tricks? I'd love to know how to get Ant+ Agent working without having to use a virtual windows box

  • Didn't you just waste a whole load of money on a home server already?

What is it you are actually trying to do? It's quite possible that the solution you have chosen is not the one you need.

  • i am trying to turn my unused tablet into a digital remote for my media server.

i have partially managed using ViewTeam but the forum doesnt respond to it...

  • What media server? I've found the remotes for XBMC hit and miss - some control nothing, others have some buttons working, others another set of different commands. It's all a bit fuxered. I wish there was a front end for Plex on Linux (I think there may be one in beta?).

  • the whole pc is my media serve... ot sure what you mean.

  • I thought you were perhaps using a front-end of some sort. So you basically just want it to act as a long range mouse/keyboard to do what you would be doing if you were in front of the computer?

  • To install teamviewer client on the tablet, just download the installer from the teamviewer website.

Is the forum the only thing that doesn't work?

What is the server running? If it's windows, just use rdesktop on the tablet.

  • ubuntu... thats why i ask in the linux thread
