  • get a pompino?

  • Here is my current pompetamine setup. Really enjoying it. The fork is a thorn disc fork and it's so much nice to attach guards and racks to than the old p2. it also has the correct length steerer, woohoo. It's the low trail version which may or may not improve things with the front rack, but I haven't got the other fork so I can't really compare

yes I know the tape is a mess, I did it on the train whilst on the way to dover and I can't be arse to do it again. I also need new cables as they are too short. Really want to go touring again.

  • The bag is a converted mail bag btw. Don't ask me how I converted it, I haven't a clue. Needs a waterproof lining.

  • How did you convert it?

  • Yeh the rack is ace, though I keep wandering if I can bend it so that it mounts on the low rider braze ons and then I can have low riders too? I'd need a pipe bender though. One day maybe.

For the bad it's something like, get a mail bag, unpick everything, fold it to be the right shape, sew it back up, sew on straps. But actually sew in a liner as the mail bag material isn't totally waterproof.

  • @Harold easier to make a bag from nothing?

  • No, from fresh material.

  • Captain hindsight would probably say yes. I started out only wanting to make a few mods and add straps, but got a bit carried away. Also i thought it would be waterproof. It works really well though when touring, and also during my occaisional epic commute to reading and back.

  • Alternatively.....

  • This is my Pompino. Around 6 years old, raced, trained and toured on it. It's my favourite bike!

  • Touring guise during a LEJOG trip! Basically, all I did was add a rack! Oh, I strap a garmin on too!

  • Does that road fork(?) affect the geometry much?

  • Not sure really as I never had the Pomp fork on it! I think it's a fairly standard raked road fork made by Alpina (dotbike) Fancied a decent front road caliper and saving a bit of weight over the anchor of the original!

  • mine

  • Does anybody know if the current Pompino frames come with a BB shell that has been faced for GXP/Hollowtech etc. type external bottom brackets?

  • I read your blog and have it on favourites...did you replace the bars @pompy

  • Advice please people of the Pompino!

I'm 5'8" and wondering if the small is a good size? (planning to build with drops and hoods)
The On One site recommends 5′1″ to 5′6″ for the Small. Anyone built similar?

  • Get a medium.

  • Internet bike fit etc....

(I'm 5 foot 7 and the small was too small, medium is good)

  • (Based on the v3, BTW)

  • I took my Pompetamine to the LBS as it needed facing for a Hollowtech BB. £25 for BB prep and headset prep/fitting seemed fair enough.

  • Thanks. Looking at the V4 but tend to prefer smaller frames. Will investigate further.

  • Yes i didn't have to face the BB on my V4 . im using a hollow 2 with no spacers.

  • I echo @Cupcakes's suggestion, get the medium, if their geometry is anything to go by, they're shorter in reach for the size.
