the big plus with axle mounted mudguard stays is that you do not have to adjust the stays when you change wheel position. (gear change, chain wear etc.)
also if you get adapters with slots rather than holes you don't have to thread the track nuts all the way off to remove them. this is especially handy in a situation where you have to remove the wheel. (puncture, gear change etc.)
