I'll say 130. If necessary it could always be re-spaced to 135...

132.5!
(now I'm at home and can google, there's an indecisive thread over on stw) -

135mm would mean a stronger dished wheels if you think about it, also bending axles wouldn't be a problem with cassette freehub, if you look at this diagram, you can see why axles bend on screw-on hubs (specifically where the ball bearing is located);
130mm give you a wider choice of modern road hubs.
@6pt suggestion is the best option, really useful and make the frame more versatile in the long run.

Thanks for the diagram above. Saved. I knew the reason behind bending freewheel type axle, I looked into it when I got bored of replacing axles every 6 month. But I never found a clear drawing / illustration of this.
I emailed Winston and said 130. Road hub is what I'm looking for. Not sure I want to add weight with MTB ones.
For the wheels I have a pair of old NOS DP18 (not the fancy ones with no breaking surface, some later ones with breaking surface).
They should be strong enough for the purpose as 36H.Any cheap hub recommendations?
Looking at this ATM
What is the maximum size tyre that I can use with normal road rims. I used 28C pasellas before, but they look more like 25C. Is 30 / 32c doable?

Shimano 105, Ambrosio Zenith, Novatec to name but a few.

By normal, I assumed you mean 15mm internal width, so 28mm is the max you can go without compromising comfort/performance, you can run 32mm easily, just you won't get the benefit of the 32mm.
Would recommend going for rims that are 17mm wide (internally), you can run lower pressure.

I found 36H to be a bit of a restriction when looking around.

Mavic A719, Rigida Grizzly, pretty much any decent touring rims will do.

Finally agreed on final details with Winston on Sat, brazing should start soon.
(Note that top tube is not in place, there won't be a big head tube sticking out like on the picture...)

Belated response to this, but forum favourite for wider rims, H+SON Archetypes come in 36h, and polished silver:

I have that crown, really nice, and pretty wide enough for 60mm tyres even.

I'm hoping to use these NOS rims I have... but if I was to build another wheelset later, these are indeed nice. Forum has good taste...

It looks good on that picture, in conjunction with more modern-ish look / bright colour, etc...

Any idea of the size of the tyre on that picture anyone? so I have an idea of gap filling? (I may have mudguards)
-
• #44
It's just about visible in the bottom left corner of the photo, but doing some photoshop enhance magic doesn't give me a clear answer :/ I think it's a 45c.

Wow, you should work for London CSI...

I have that crown
Do you have a picture somewhere, showing tyre clearence, mudguards, etc?

My Oak have 60mm mudguard on it that fill in the clearance and 42mm tyres too.

Think it's Rock & Road tyres, and your enchanced potatoes chopping skill is near correct; 43mm.

Ah, didn't realised it was on the Oak. I did just look on your thread a minute ago, but didn't find close-up.
At the moment I have a lot less clearance at the back though... but I never intended more that 32 / 35c. I'll have plenty of space at the front...

fatter tyre on the front then, like Rosie's singular:

Hey all.
Winston is asking me if I want 130 or 135 spacing. I have no idea. My most recent bike (Brompton aside) is from 1998 so I have no clue really.
I know that when using freewheel obsolete technology, I tend to bend axles, so to 130mm is my gut feeling here. Will that limit me in hub choice with 130, considering I won't have disc brakes?
