No, pretty much any chainring will do. You can even use a 3/32" chainring. Check that it doesn't weirdly profiled teeth.

Thanks...building up a bike on the cheap and have some mtb cranks with a deore ring. Would that be usable?.

Possibly not the best choice as it may may have some shorter teeth to help the chain jump up from the smaller ring. Not necessarily a problem if your chainline is good, your chain is tight and you're riding on fairly smooth surfaces. Is it a 4-hole or 5-hole chainset?

Its a four hole fairly newish deore chainset...the ring will need to be changed to 44t if used.

41-16 would be a decent ratio for everyday use. 41-17 if you go up a lot of hills.

Ordered the first one as it is nice and cheap lol. Thanks again.
Do I need a specific chain ring to run fixed/singlespeed ?. Or can I use anything for standard 1/8th chain.
