Interesting. Never seen a frame like it. It's got a 9 sp ultegra crank on now and it's period correct so go with 6500 or 7700 if you can get it. Stem will need some serious slamming IMO, the way it's sitting in the pics looks funny to me.

Hello & thanks very much - my son is after one & there is what seems to be an identical frame on Ebay - I
m tall & have ridden 64 ctc seat tube most of the time but that
s a bit much for him at around 62". I wondered if it might have been for a 6
5" rider or even taller, like Edwig van Hooydonk of knee warmers fame. If you might have a similar MX leader frame with a top tube in the region of 59 / 60 & seat tube around 60 / 62 please let me know.
I think yours would suit me but my own Merckx is an older model & OK for me. Good luck with putting it together - I`ve seen some frames with weird paint but yours is very classy!
Regards, Julian -

Colnago went with extended seat and headtubes to be able to make smaller frames in larger sizes. Prior to oversized tubes (such as MAX) most frames used the same lightweight steel tubes cut to different sizes. Large frames where quite noodles--- my wife used to get nervous watching me sprint on a 531DB frame as the bottom bracket defection was so extreme she though that the frame was going to rupture and collapse under me. Back then one was also limited by stem and seatpost lengths. Handlebars were deep, stems and seatposts had heights limited to dimensions more typical of shorter riders and shifters were on the downtube. Today frame stiffness is no longer an issue. Seatposts are offered in very long lengths using superior materials--- and their diameter has increased to 31.7mm. Today's shifting is via brake controllers, bars are shallow and people spend most of their time on the hoods.. There is absolutely no advantage extending the head-tube (over the top-tube) and using a 7 rather than a rising stem.

So its basically a merckx mxl frame, with extensions to the head and seat tube
making it look ugly and an after thought.a bit like some one falling asleep in a green house
for a week and who's father said 'don't worry about it son we'll sort it ' -
