That route ironically enough, is the cheapest way to go full hydraulic and 11 speed on a budget.
105 5800 drivetrain*, Dura Ace bar-end shifter (£65-80), and TRP Hylex £200-230).
*doesn't required 11 speed front derailleur, or chainset, any 9/10 speed one will do (even my Claris work despite taking a little longer to shift up).
I considered bar end shifters for the purpose of (light) touring but for day to day use I really want STIs.
I also can't see me needing CX gearing.. A compact road chainset with a wider ~32t cassette seems to me like a good choice for all round usage.
