  • Thanks dan. I did UTFS but was still a bit unclear..

The next bike is slowly coming together in my head, and, as a custom frame it would seem like a good excuse to try them given all the positive comments they receive on here.

  • Yeah but make sure you get the shimano hydraulic versions, if you do go disc.
    Which I would.

  • @onyerbike I think disc's in the end mean a lot more weight in general, frame needs to be stronger with supports, hubs are heavier, actual disc brake + rotors are heavier, wheels need more spokes, all as opposed to saving a bit of weight on the rim.

Though like others have said, big weight savings aren't the point of discs.

  • 7970 junction box seems to be diff to 6770 .. cables are going in from just one side (like 6870 and 9070)

  • Why?

The levers are a comfortable shape but feel cheap and plasticy and aren't grippy at all. They brake levers feel too big, I have to really reach down them to get enough leverage to stop quickly compared to the Sram I am used to. The shift paddle gives you no feedback at all, you just swing it and hope it has shifts. It all just feels cheap, but works so I can't complain too much.

  • can you adjust the reach for the levers?

  • It is cheap! But yes it does feel plastically and poor. But that's what it is. However it's never failed me once so far, works flawlessly.

I think you can adjust the reach, pull the hood back and there is a allen key hole. That does it.

  • can you adjust the reach for the levers?

It's not the reach, it feels more like the pivot point for the lever is too low down.

  • Anyone have a good source (other than ebay) for last seasons (2012/2013) groupsets? Am looking for a 10 speed force groupset and not having much luck so far on the regular (merlin/crc/wiggle/ribble).

  • unslam that stem?

or go for the armstrong stag beetle set up

It's not that I can't reach, I just have to move my fingers further down the lever to brake quickly than I do on my Sram levers. The fact they are fat and wide and completely smooth just makes it a bit more awkward.

    Tried Fudge, Chicken and FatBirds?

  • Thanks! Didnt know about those ones....

  • GXP BBs, is it a choice between £20 SRAM or £70 Hope with nothing in between those two quality -wise?

  • Chris King?

  • Having upgraded the LOOK to 11 Record shifters and Chorus rear mech and cassette I'm absolutely delighted. Carbon is way grippier than alu as a lever material, I can descend in the drops very comfortably, the shifting is perfect, really easy to dial in and always finds the right sprocket. Being able to sweep across the whole cassette in two moves is still rad. The 11 speed KMC chain runs perfectly on 10 speed rings and front mech too... now I need a winter bike.

  • Carbon is way grippier than alu as a lever material

    I find the opposite.

  • Gotcha, braking from hood take more effort than the other.

Hydraulic should make it less of an issue I hope.

  • Maybe it's just the shape of the levers / new bars. I was recklessly descending down Mallorcan Cols with only one finger on the front brake lever, but feeling totally confident in its stopping ability. TRP + SwissStops help too.

  • You can buy a GXP BB then bash out the bearings and replaced them with some 'better' bearings. But maybe life is too short.

In my experience the stock GXP BBs take some abuse before going notchy so it would take a lot of riding before the hope BB works out cheaper.

  • ^^ It's because you were on holiday and obviously everything is ~37% improved whilst holidaying.
