Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • Look like you're right, was thinking of getting 140mm on the rear, 160mm is way too big.

  • By the time @edscoble became self-aware it had spread into millions of computer servers across the planet. Ordinary computers in office buildings, dorm rooms; everywhere. It was software; in cyberspace. There was no system core; it could not be shutdown. The attack began at 6:18 PM, just as he said it would. Judgment Day, the day the human race was almost destroyed by the weapons they'd built to protect themselves. I should have realized it was never our destiny to stop Judgment Day, it was merely to survive it, together. @andyp knew; he tried to tell us, but I didn't want to hear it. Maybe the future has been written. I don't know; all I know is what the @andyp taught me; never stop fighting. And I never will. The battle has just begun.

  • Would rep.

  • These are truly the last days

  • Avid rotors seem ok and you might be able to get TRP rotors separately.

    Even the shonky ashima buzzsaw rotors stop my 60kg bulk without drama in 140mm format.

  • Although annoyingly they don't do a 6 bolt version of the ICE version with cooling fins.

  • Yeah, big pet peeves that is, I don't know whether it's actually worthwhile going for the centerlock version, especially when I already got a pretty good rebuildable hubs as it is.

    Having cooling fins on the pads would make a bigger difference than on the rotor methinks, like on the Shimano road hydraulic.

  • I don't know whether it's actually worthwhile going for the centerlock

    No. Never.

    So many times I have customer complain about squeaky/squeely brakes and they always have centrelock. They tried new pads, new rotor, align everything, clean everything, bleed it all and still problem persists.

    Put a 6 bolt wheel in and problem instantly resolved.

  • Two disc based questions...

    Is a 140mm rotor enough for a front-disc fixed commuter use?
    The 140mm TRP Spyre's come with "140 versions include our L2 (140R/160F) IS to PM adapter" does that mean I can run it with a 160 rotor if I wanted?

  • Yup, you can flip the mount upside down for 160mm rotor.

  • Perfect, thanks!

  • They give you two adapters with the 160 version one 160 front 140 rear and the other 180 front 160 rear. Not sure about the 140 version. Going on the polo rig soon!

  • L-1 is TRP´s "is to post mount adapter" for a front 140mm rotor
    (only company that makes one...)

  • (disc) brakes are death

  • You couldn't be anymore accurate actually, I take more risk than I usually do due to predictable stopping power and distance, had some close call due to this stupidly.

    Really need to take it easy.

  • Look like Ashima is introducing their own version of the TRP HY/RD;

    Look to be smaller than the HY/RD;

  • Looks cleaner

  • If looks could kill... ;)

  • Looks like the mount on my fork isn't well aligned and a Shimano CX77 will not go on straight. The Avid BB5 mounting system seemed to be able to compensate for this with the cupped washers but the Shimano just bolts on.

    What are my options?

  • IS or post mount? If it's post you can get the posts faced flat at an LBS that knows its shit. If it's IS or an IS-> Post adapter then you can shim out the shonkyness or get the IS tabs faced flat.

  • Anybody on here got experience of using the TRP Spyke ?

    They look just like a slightly beefier version of the Spyre

  • @Dangeruss has them on his Genesis. They felt good when I had a little roll around on it

  • Cheers @andy_k. While I'm happy with my BB7s, I'd prefer something a little more svelte for the new build.

  • Yeah it's an IS with Post adaptor. Put a new Shimano adapter on and problem still there; everything looks fine till last turns of the allen key and the caliper rolls in a couple of degrees.

    How and with what would one shim? The brake shims I've seen are all flat.

    I've had a moan at Charge too and mentioned the 5 year warranty

  • IS shims go inbetween the IS tab and the caliper or in your case the adapter.
