Cleaning Gumwall tyres aka panaracers

  • So, wasn't sure where to put this but I've picked up a bit of grease on the rear and Fuck know what in the front gumwall. Any quick suggestions for removing stains without perishing the rubber? A damp cloth didn't have much effect. White wine vinegar perhaps?

  • Stiff brush, very hot water, tiny bit of washing-up liquid.

  • Fuck know what in the front gumwall

Isn't that just the brake blocks bleeding their material in the wet?

  • @Velocio Must be. For some reason I thought it was from the tyres. It is only on one half of the wheel so was thinking it might have then dripped down once I'd finished riding. I guess with centrifugal force your idea makes a lot more sense

  • Cheers, will try that out.

  • If you have a friendly LBS ask to use their parts washer....nothing better.

albeit a little extreme for just cleaning tyres

  • i find a bit of metal polish ( white liquid stuff i got from local pound shop) on a rag and rub and they come up like new, cant say about long term effects, it just kind of happened as i was polishing my rims.

  • After a hard winter tried some Cillet Bang with a scouring pad on mine and they looked almost new after a very light rub, rinsed them off immediately with water . Again cant vouch for long term effects but seem fine. Will update if they disintigrate over the next month!

  • baby wipes get that stuff off really well. tcut is also good for cleanning tyres. apparently baby oil brings old tyres up like new too.

  • I've used white spirit on mine many times with no obvious bad effects.

  • Petrol

  • i thought it was oil flung off the chain etc, only really noticed it on the back wheel. though that might just be coincidence.

don't use white spirit, it will degrade the rubber! citrus bike cleaner works nicely

  • Bringing this thread back to life as I’ve got a few gumwalls that are filthy - I’ve tried white vinegar, fairly liquid and a green scourer pad, ‘astonish’ which have shifted a bit but nothing to really shout about...

I’ve used toothpaste on white brake hoods and that works a treat! Will try on tyres...

Met a guy on T’eroica who suggested a rubber rejuvenator but can’t recall the product name...

I’ve also seen folks applying seamgrip prior to using new gumwalls to keep them fresh for longer, I’ve tried this and it didn’t make much difference in my opinion...

Any other hints tips and cheats?

    Cheers!
    Matt

  • rubber rejuvenator

I've already mocked the very idea of cleaning tyres in the other thread. But since I'm eternally conflicted also offer some potential useful info...

    Armour All?

  • If you're not entirely offended at buying small, job specific products, Crankalicious make a gumwall tyre cleaner. Whilst most of their products are utter dogfoul, this actually works very well.

  • I've had very good results with Jif cleaning cream. If the tires aren't too bad, agitate with a soft brush. Otherwise, a green "scotch brite" will get the most stubborn grime off.

  • Seconded, cif + scotch pad.
Similar for bar tape, maybe a worn scotch pad ;)
