I went to halfords and bought a spray can of clear spray paint that you'd use as the top coat. It held up fine. Obviously it rusts a bit underneath and discolours over time, so you need to keep an eye on it. But mine is an old 531 track frame that's fairly tough. I wouldn't ever raw anything that's made from decent tubing unless you want to have to baby it.
IMO although clear coating takes a bit more work at the start, it is easier than having to constantly wipe or oil it to make sure you avoid rust marks on your clothes.
so i've polished up a pair of ally cranks and stripped a dodgy paint job from a steel frame leaving me with bare metal and possible corrosion issues in the future
when people say they clearcoat a frame what exactly do they use ? is it a varnish type thing ? is there a special metal " varnish ", would wd-40 on a cloth be enough ? nice bit of olive oil rubbed into the lugs ?
what should i use ?
