  • I bet you felt a right penus

    #kony2012

  • Meh, they're dodgy as it is, I got banned for having a duplicate account (I didn't).

  • To which incident are you referring to?

trager had clearly and admittedly been selling "REPLICA" wares on BR that had been stickered as something that there were not. He was warned about it and went off on one and subsequently banned.

He did the same on here, whilst also selling things on eBay (against out rules), and having an eBay account whose reputation had been achieved by selling 1p plant seeds in a little eBay ring.

So we have this one person, trager, attempting to sell knockoff goods, and arguing that because he's got small-print saying that they're replica that it's OK, and when called out on it he turns and argues at others. He does this on several sites, whilst constantly ignoring the very rules that each site has determined to be their line of acceptability.

I've no idea what your beef is with Bike Radar as you might notice... you haven't said.

But in the case of trager it was pretty clear cut and the community is what people make it, and the community were pretty damn vocal in not wanting him on here, ignoring the rules the community had helped create, and selling dodgy items.

    And your beef is?

  • You seem very confused, you conclude there can only be absolutes. Are you Tommy?

Only today we have a high profile example in the news of someone coming to a similar conclusion and now enjoying 18 weeks in prison.

Just because technology allows anyone to communicate doesn't grant them the right to say or do anything. The old adage remains true that free speech doesn't protect someone if they run into a theatre and shout "Fire!".

Yes anyone can set up a website, but you'll discover if you do that you are responsible for it. Legally so, and people have ended up in prison or bankrupt for running websites.

The moment you allow comments and end user input various laws apply. As a website owner you must, by law, take reasonable steps to protect users, not spread malware, not allow race hate, not participate in fraud, and the list goes on.

Then you'll find that the communities themselves will establish their own set of rules to protect them from whatever disrupts their community.

Somehow you think that the people who run website have no right to ban people, when the law dictates that they must do something. And you think that communities who want people banned have no right to ban people, even though that is the will of those people.

As I said, you seem very confused.

Plus, if it's so easy and you desire a place where no-one can ban you... Set up your own forum. As you say, the tools are there. Be sure to never ban anyone though, that's against your beliefs.

  • the Internet is an open space

Up to a point, but every individual server is a privately owned, er, what's the word, oh yes, Domain, over which the owner can exercise whatever controls he likes.

    domain (n.):

    1. The land that a ruler or a government controls
    2. A territory over which rule or control is exercised.

    etc.

  • Ban him in the face.

  • Ban him, and his children, and his children's children. For 3 months.

  • You seem to be missing a lot of what this forum is about.

Maybe that's because all you do on this forum is sell things.

You should probably consider doing one.

  • I wouldn't go so far as to ban him in the face.

I used to share his opinion. But reality kinda kicked me in the teeth and made me realise that my anti-authoritarian dreams really didn't have much of a place in this world. And much to my chagrin I found myself being the authority of a small domain (this one, and a few others).

I think @ABCNews doesn't have a bad dream, I just think the reality is a harsh one. Unfortunately I can't opt out of it whilst still existing within it, and neither can anyone else. At some level you've got to be at peace with how society and the world works, not because you accept it as being ideal but because to fight against every part of it is exhausting, and it's almost certain you'll come off worse.

So I'll say... I don't disagree with the idea. It's just not the world we live in, and so spammers, trolls, anyone looking like they're committing fraud, or selling stolen gear, etc... those people will be banned. And by virtue of banning people (something I do very seldom relative to all other forums and mods), perhaps what is left is artificially closer to that space in which we can talk shit freely.

  • What is your user name on BR @ABCNews

  • I guess everybody in London is allowed in the British Library but if you walk in and shit on the floor you will be asked to leave, possibly arrested and banned from ever returning. What's the dif?

Speaking of creating a community, it takes a bit more than free code and a 'Forums for Dummies' book..

  • They also banned me from other libraries.

  • Sick plot twist @ABCNews is the velo nutter guy.

  • I see dead people.

  • How do I give rep to Velonutter?

  • Are you on Bike Radar? PM him there, point him over here... (s)he might enjoy the read.

  • I bet he does Audax

  • Grumpy old man you mean?

  • Actually I find most audax riders to be fairly patient and wise old men.

Something about rider at 15mph for hours on end probably.
