Turning a Road Bike into a Tourer??

Posted on
  • This question has probably been asked before I apologise in advance for this and my lack of bike knowledge.

Can a road bike be turned in to a tourer simply buy adding some braze ons or P clips?? can you buy brackets thats will hold a rear rack?? Guessing the front racks a bit more tricky?

I understand that the reason for dedicated touring frames has a lot to do with strength and not just bits to attach racks. But how much stronger are they?

If you have a nice steal frame surely whacking another 15 - 20 kilos on it isn't going to brake it?
This will put the hubs / wheels under more pressure but I would have thought most modern bikes could handle it?? ( maybe just get a solid back wheel for your existing bike? )

Im not talking about a fully loaded round the world trip I'm talking a couple of days away travelling light??

Hoping you guys can give me some pointers.

  • Tyre clearance is high on the list of priorities, you might wanna see how big a tyre the frame will take before eyeing up cargo solutions.

  • You can buy various gubbins that allow you to fit rear racks via a combination of QR skewer and clips. Tubus do a kit for their racks.

Another option would be one of the smaller Carradice bags with support. It really depends if by 'touring' you mean 'touring with a tent'.

  • yep it depends if you mean tent touring.
I have done 3, 4 or 10 days trips on my carbon bike without issues and the need for stronger wheels, but i'm talking lightweight touring with 3 kilos of stuff max on a rear seatpost rack.
With 15 kilos extra you would definitly need to make sure you have strong enough wheels.

  • I just got back from a 9 day tour from Amsterdam to Ireland on my alu/carbon road bike, doing pretty much what you've described above. I bought a QR based pannier rack and a handlebar bag. There was about 7 kilos in each pannier plus a sleeping bag (which I never bloody used). There was no tent involved however.

I think the important thing is to research the weight limits of your wheels. You and all the stuff you want to carry needs to come in below 100kgs because this is the usual wheel limit.

p.s. The rack is a Axiom Streamliner Road Deluxe Rear Rack. However the brake mount snapped on the penultimate day so not sure I'd recommend it...

  • impressive: those wheels have a 110kg weight limit on them. I weigh 85-90kg. I'm not doing that!
