• It's not a bike, but it is bike-related. I need to replace the bearings in a Zipp wheel, so I've made up some tooling to do it properly. From left to right: expanding punch for removing bearings with a 17mm ID, bearing press with mandrels for 25mm OD/17mm ID bearings, and a thingy for holding a freehub in place while the bearings are tapped out. And finally, a 1/8" chain whip, because I didn't have one, needed one ASAP, and so decided just to make one.

  • I'm getting my workshop set up and just dipping my toe into fabrication and machining. Big thing I find is the difficulty and expense of sourcing the raw material. Ususally, things like these, that I think I'll just knock up, would end up costing about 3x more in materials than I would need to pay to just buy whatever it is I'm making.

    Am I missing something?

  • buy materials in bulk.

  • Start networking.
As a hobbyist (I'm assuming here) you'll never get stuff for a reasonable price; either get good fast and incorporate to take advantage of wholesale prices or get to know suppliers and find out what they do with offcuts or end-of-rolls or whatever they call them in that industry.
