Unknown, but happy about it.

Happier if the road bike was covered outside the home also, but then my major concern about that is coming home to find the door off it's hinges and the bikes gone, and at least that is covered.

That's very cheap.
They're going to count the SRM as a separate item even if it's on the bike? Sounds unlike an insurer.

First guy I spoke to on the phone said they'd do it, then once I'd bought the policy they said they wouldn't, I told them that I'd bought it on that basis- they sorted it out.
It took a good few weeks of going back and forth, but it got sorted in the end.
I think it hinged on the fact that I move it from bike to bike (which proved it's portability), despite it being pretty well secured to the bike whilst in use.

how so cheap?! No claims bonus I guess?
It's because his bikes don't weigh very much, and he sent them pictures of all the bits on the scales.

Arse. £840 for M&S insurance.
Is there a cost-effective way of insurance expensive bikes for full-replacement value that doesn't involve buy them over again in three years through insurance?
-
• #83
Insure it yourself - Put your own money in an account earmarked for replacing the bike if it gets nicked.

I'd still like the rest of the house insured without me leaving money aside for it. They fucked me when they change their policy to remove bikes from the £4k Unlimited cover thing.

https://www.eta.co.uk/insurance/cycle/
Race/touring/etc cover included. Works out ~10% of bike value per year...

FWIW I've just made a claim with Halifax. They've been much better than expected (despite the garage only being covered for 2k) - by allowing me to add my excess on to the value of my cover and passing on the discount they have with their bike supplier (25%), essentially giving me £2.9k cover.
Admittedly not much use if you've anything unique/vintage (I'm resigned to never seeing my CB frame again), but I have two replacement bikes arriving tomorrow, both of which are the latest models of those stolen.
Also, no idea how my premium will change now.

Time for renewal; our bikes have changed their value. Still M&S or someone else? They are a little pricey this year ...
A friend of mine just got fucked over by insurance (Aviva) who said they cover bikes outside residence but when it came to replacing the stolen bike they backed off; lots of grey areas* BUT they could've paid if they wanted to
- bike was in a locked garage which is used by work to store stuff and there was a delivery happening at the time and it was open so the thief walked in with his shitty bike and walked out with my mates shiny tokyo fixed bike. The bike was unlocked and so were the other 10 in the garage on vertical stand. Insurance said the bike wasnt locked (that is not required if its in a locked premises) but then the garage door was open. The guy in charge of deliveries washed his hands off any responsibility. No bike; no insurance money.
Thankfully I didnt ride that day having ridden 70+ miles day before otherwise it'd have been my bike. I feel really bad about that. Now everyone locks their bikes in the garage and mine (being the most expensive) is inside the office in cleaning closet.
tl:dr Should I stay with M&S at £80 per month or switch?

M&S changed their policy on bikes worth more than £2.5k or 1k (I forget) which makes them considerably more expensive if you own bling.

Just had a nice chat/call with Hiscox rep; looks like I am going with them. £100 extra for the whole policy period for bikes above £3.5k; still cheaper than M&S and Hiscox themselves are underwriters

Do they cover bikes outside the house for loss and damage? Sounds good if there's no catch.
-
• #92
Yeah that was all outside the house ^^
Judging from the calls I have been making since a couple of days Hiscox seems to have the best customer service.
The most lol call was from these cunts: https://www.onecalldirect.co.uk/ They basically read the terms and conditions really fast like at the end of the advert on the phone. -

my renewal is up and it's over a grand... I've claimed twice this year though with a shower leak then storm damage. They were great but I'm going to pay for it all anyway at that rate

Yeah. I'm too lazy to trawl through piles of insurance companies to find an alternative. I might end up doing the 'put money in an account' kind of insurance.

Went with Hiscox.
Amazing customer service on phone and otherwise; personal handwritten thank you note with very well (and simply written) policy documents too. More human less machine.
My insurance premium went half (compared to M&S); we dont own any valuables apart from bikes which are not defined as valuables. Bikes under £3k (i think) are covered without a mention; between £3k and £5k you have to mention them (make etc.) above £5k they charge one time fee/premium of £100 (dont have to pay at next renewal if stayed with Hiscox obvsly). They are covered outside house if kept locked. As well as 90 day global (outside UK) cover.
Would recommend.

As a landlord I now do this, although it's in stocks. So far I've had to pay (over 2 years) 200 quid for some work done. That wouldn't have covered the deductible.

Are Hiscox still the company to go with?
-

Anyone used http://pedalcover.co.uk ?
They cover bikes up to £10k.

Figured we were paying through the nose for our M&S insurance I just tried to get a quote from Hiscox for home and contents insurance but unfortunately they can't give me a quote due to 'the area your property is located in'. I live in E8 ffs!! Back to the drawing board then..

E8 .. thats your answer ;)
